Elche vs Real Betis Preview
Real Betis travel to Elche this weekend in LaLiga and they’ll be hoping to put what was a miserable week prior to the international break firmly behind them. It won’t be easy though against an Elche side that are tough to beat on their own ground and will be eyeing up a much needed victory.
A five game winless streak has seen Elche slide down the table and fall into the relegation zone. Despite some ambitious summer recruitment, it’s not a great surprise to see Elche near the bottom of the league again and Fran Escriba is certainly not a man under pressure given everything he has achieved at this club. However he will be keen to ensure this current dip doesn’t turn into a real slide with a long winter ahead.
Elche came within seconds of winning their last match and ending that run. A brace from Lucas Boye had put them 2-1 up at Mallorca but the Balearic Islanders managed to find a 95th minute leveller from Pablo Maffeo. We’ve certainly seen enough from Elche to suggest they are capable of beating the drop again and they are almost always competitive at home with Real Madrid the only victors this season at the Estadio Martínez Valero.
Real Betis would have fancied their chances of becoming the second team to do that but their confidence levels would unquestionably have taken a knock from a disastrous week prior to international break. They lost all three matches to nil, conceding nine goals in the process, culminating in a home derby loss against Sevilla.
Excluding penalty shootouts, Manuel Pellegrini’s side had only lost four matches in all competitions in all of 2021 prior to that sequence. They’ve had a brilliant year overall and are still well placed in LaLiga but it’s really important they respond in the right way and they will be keen to ensure they at least avoid defeat here.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Betis Wins, 2 Elche Wins, 2 Draws.
- The sides drew 1-1 here in April in the most recent meeting.
- Elche haven’t beaten Betis at home since a 3-0 Segunda Division win in November 2009.
- They have won 3 times at the Benito Villamarin since then though.
Pablo Piatti is a doubt for the hosts but they have no other major selection issues.
Guido Rodriguez is banned for Betis following his Seville derby red. Summer signing Youssef Sabaly is still struggling to get fit.
Elche vs Real Betis Predictions
Score Prediction: Elche 1-1 Real Betis
A draw looks the most likely outcome here. That has been the result in 4 of Elche’s 6 home games so far this season in LaLiga and they are struggling to convert one point into three at the moment. Betis might have fancied winning here had this game been a few weeks ago but following those three straight losses, they may be reluctant to be too bold and would perhaps be content with a point to stop the rot and set themselves up for two winnable home games over the next seven days.
