Celta Vigo vs Villarreal Preview
Celta Vigo and Villarreal clash at Balaidos on Saturday in what has the potential to be one of the most watchable games this weekend in LaLiga. Both sides have dangerous attacking players and are capable of exciting football but all too often their flaws have been exposed this season.
The hosts come into this having been involved in one of the most remarkable games of the campaign so far. 3-0 down at the break, Celta Vigo looked completely out of it against a dominant Barcelona side a fortnight ago. However they staged a fantastic 2nd Half comeback with talisman Iago Aspas back on song with a brace which helped salvage a 3-3 draw.
The hope in this part of Galicia will be that that proves to be a major turning point in their season. A third of the way in, Celta are averaging less than a point per game. They’ve not really had significant injury problems to deal with either, at least not compared to many other teams who they were hoping to compete with. These next few weeks are going to be key if they are going to turn things around and give themselves a chance of pushing for the lower European places in 2022.
Villarreal have also endured a difficult domestic campaign so far. They just haven’t convinced in LaLiga with their old habits of drawing too many games continuing and there have also been some damaging defeats. They weren’t massively convincing last time out either with an early goal from Manu Trigueros sealing a 1-0 win at home to lowly Getafe.
This marks the start of a crucial fortnight or so for Unai Emery’s men. They host both Manchester United and Barcelona next week before a trip to Sevilla in LaLiga and what could be a decisive final UCL group game at Atalanta. Key man Gerard Moreno is still battling back to fitness and may not be risked here, although otherwise Villarreal look to have a clean bill of health from which to attack this key period in the season.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Celta Wins, 2 Villarreal Wins.
- Villarreal have won on 4 of their last 5 trips to Vigo.
- They won 4-0 on this ground earlier this year.
- 7 of the last 10 meetings overall have seen one team score 3+ goals.
Hugo Mallo is injured for the hosts and Renato Tapia is banned but otherwise they should be at full strength
The same goes for Villarreal with the exception of forward Gerard Moreno.
Celta Vigo vs Villarreal Predictions
Score Prediction: Celta Vigo 2-2 Villarreal
This has the makings of a good game. The nature of Celta’s comeback against Barcelona will surely have given them confidence and the expected absence of Gerard Moreno is always significant for Villarreal. However neither side has really convinced enough this season to suggest they will have enough to pick up the win here and a score draw looks a likely outcome.
