Levante vs Athletic Club Preview

Levante match action

Levante and Athletic Club clash in the Friday night game in LaLiga as the Spanish top flight returns following the international break. The picture is looking increasingly bleak for Levante and their fans will be desperate for any kind of victory at this stage to help lift the gloom that is starting to set in around the Ciutat de Valencia.

Their winless streak in LaLiga now stands at 21 games and even a managerial switch has failed to end it. Six weeks have now passed since Paco Lopez was fired and his successor Javier Pereira has failed to turn Levante’s fortunes around. Indeed things have arguably got worse with a return of just 2 points from 5 games since the change and Levante headed into the international break following damaging defeats to fellow strugglers Granada and Alaves.

Already, Pereira may find himself fighting for his job if they suffer another loss here. Injuries haven’t helped his settling into this job and Levante are likely to be without Jorde de Frutos, Sergio Postigo and Roger Marti here again. However it’s hard not to come to the conclusion that there are also significant structural problems with this side, particularly at the back with 12 goals conceded in their last 4 games.

Athletic aren’t the kind of free-scoring team that would be expected to really punish them for that but they do have players more than capable of taking advantage of any space they may get. Marcelino’s side also went into the international break on a bit of a downer in the shape of a surprise 1-0 home defeat against lowly Cadiz, a repeat of the scoreline in the corresponding fixture last term.

That match perhaps highlighted how Athletic are a bit short on creativity and lack ideas when it comes to breaking down teams that sit deep and look to play on the break. It has been a concern for a while and there is no quick fix with Iker Muniain their only consistent creative threat. Overall it has still been a solid start for an Athletic side that come into this game with LaLiga’s second best defensive record but these are the kind of fixtures they may need to win if they are going to challenge for the European places.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Athletic Wins, 2 Draws.
  • The sides last met in the Copa del Rey Semi-Final on this ground last season when Athletic won 2-1 in Extra Time.
  • Athletic are unbeaten in 7 games against Levante overall.
  • Levante’s last victory in this fixture was by a 3-0 margin in LaLiga in 2018.

Team News

Jorge de Frutos is sidelined through injury for Levante. This game may also come too soon for Roger Marti and Sergio Postigo.

Peru Nolaskoain is a major injury concern for the visitors. Dani Vivian and Yuri Berchiche are doubts.

Possible Lineups

Levante vs Athletic Club Predictions

Score Prediction: Levante 1-1 Athletic Club

Levante perhaps needed the international break to regroup and try to put some things right on the training ground. 4 of their opening 6 home games have finished level and the same is true of 5 of Athletic’s 6 away matches so far making the draw the obvious prediction here in what should be a pretty even game.
