Valencia vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Valencia stadium

One of the standout fixtures this weekend in Spain takes place at Mestalla where Valencia are playing host to champions Atletico Madrid. The visitors come here following defeat at Liverpool in the Champions League and in need of three points in LaLiga to keep pace with the early leaders.

Valencia can take confidence from having beaten one of Spain’s UCL participants last weekend. They continued their strong recent record in home derbies against Villarreal as goals from Hugo Guillamon and Carlos Soler sealed a 2-0 win in the derbi de la comunitat. Los Che only had 25% possession in the match but they made the better use of it with some direct counter attacks exploiting the cracks in the Villarreal defence.

It will be a bit more difficult to open up Atletico Madrid in quite the same manner although Atleti haven’t always convinced defensively this season. The approach is likely to be similar though with Maxi Gomez’s injury meaning their main attacking threat comes via the pace of Goncalo Guedes and Marcos Andre.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Diego Simeone employs any specific tactics to negate that. It has been a mixed week for the Atleti coach who would have been delighted with this team’s performance in the 3-0 win over an in-form Real Betis side last weekend. Yannick Carrasco, who opened the scoring was particularly impressive on the left flank, while there was another goal for substitute Joao Felix who is making a greater impact this season.

Simeone has been in the process of trying to find a system to incorporate Antoine Griezmann into a title-winning team and he looks to have settled for now on something resembling a 3-4-2-1 system with Suarez leading the line with two of Griezmann, Felix and Angel Correa playing off him. There was a setback in midweek though as Atleti were overpowered by an impressive Liverpool side in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield, leaving them with a real battle on their hands just to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Atleti Wins, 3 Draws.
  • Atletico Madrid won both meetings last season.
  • They are unbeaten in 13 games against Valencia overall.
  • 3 of the last 4 meetings in Valencia have been drawn.

Team News

Gabriel Paulista and Maxi Gomez are both out injured. Denis Cheryshev and Toni Lato are doubts.

Marcos Llorente is Atleti’s only definite absentee. Thomas Lemar is a doubt.

Possible Lineups

Valencia vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Valencia did a job on Villarreal last weekend but overall they haven’t been that impressive in recent weeks and the absence of Gabriel Paulista could leave them very vulnerable defensively here. Atleti should have enough to create chances and win this game to send them into the international break on a positive note.
