There’s a really important game at the bottom of LaLiga this Saturday as fellow strugglers Alaves and Levante clash in Vitoria. The hosts have started to pick up some much needed results but the outlook is looking bleak for Levante who have simply forgotten how to win football matches.

Alaves head into this match having taken 7 points from their last 3 games with victories over Cadiz and Elche followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Camp Nou. That’s an outstanding return given they started the season losing 7 of their opening 8 matches and it’s clear that Javi Calleja has found some solutions for those early problems and is starting to get a lot more out of this side.

An Alaves board, that has been quite trigger-happy in recent years, deserves credit for sticking by the man that kept them up last season. The primary improvements have been at the back with Alaves having conceded just 3 goals in their last 6 games, a brilliant record given that sequence of games has seen them face not only Barcelona, but also Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club and Real Betis.

There’s nothing of the sort to be positive in the opposing camp however. Levante conceded 3 goals in 90 minutes on Monday night, losing 3-0 at home to fellow strugglers Granada in a match which they’d have been targeting as the one to finally end a winless streak which now stands at 20 LaLiga matches. It’s a result which really piles the pressure on the recently appointed Javier Pereira who has endured a pretty miserable first month at the helm.

They’ve conceded 10 goals in their last 3 matches alone and that has to be a worry heading into a game against a team with a strong defence where Levante aren’t likely to get a lot of chances. Clearly Levante’s problems started well before Pereira’s appointment and they haven’t been helped by injuries but with some key players returning to fitness now, the time for excuses has to end and they need to start putting points on the board.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Alaves Wins, 1 Levante Win, 2 Draws.
  • Both meetings last season ended in draws.
  • Alaves had won 3 games in a row against Levante prior to that.
  • Levante’s only win in the last 10 meetings was a 2-1 home success in 2018.

Team News

Ximo Navarro is out for Alaves. Keeper Fernando Pacheco is still a doubt but could be fit enough to start.

Shkodran Mustafi is out for Levante. Their other injury problems have mostly cleared up although Roger Marti and Sergio Postigo are both doubts still.

Possible Lineups

Alaves vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: Alaves 1-0 Levante

Alaves seem to have stumbled on a successful formula at the moment and while they have significant limitations, they are an awkward side to play against. They don’t look like giving up too many chances and should have just enough going forwards to claim the win against a Levante side whose confidence levels will be at rock bottom.
