Athletic Club vs Cadiz Preview

Athletic Club stadium

The Friday night action in LaLiga comes from San Mames. Cadiz claimed an unlikely victory on this ground last season but they may find it tougher this time around against an improving Athletic side that are looking like European candidates under Marcelino.

Athletic have only lost once so far this term. It was very nearly two last Sunday but the outstanding Iker Muniain scored a Stoppage Time free-kick to salvage a point in the Basque derby at the Reale Arena. That would have felt like a huge result away to the current leaders who have certainly been the most talked about Basque club this season, all the sweeter given Athletic were actually down to 10 men at the time following Inigo Martinez’s red card.

The progress under Marcelino is becoming increasingly clear. Athletic have the joint best defensive record this season in LaLiga and young players are starting to get their chance. They’ve also managed to get key men Muniain and Inaki Williams back to their best and the former may be key here in trying to break down a Cadiz side that is sure to sit back and defend deep.

Cadiz will most likely look to emulate their showing at Villarreal last week. They scored 3 goals with just a 22% share of possession with Anthony Lozano enjoying a night he will never forget with a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw. Cadiz conceded a Stoppage Time equaliser to deny them victory in that game, but they scored one on their own last weekend, with Alvaro Negredo netting a 93rd minute penalty to seal a 1-1 home draw against Mallorca.

It’s Cadiz’s inability to win home games against teams from mid-table down which will be a massive concern for Alvaro Cervera right now. In addition to the Balearic Islanders, we’ve also seen Levante, Osasuna, Valencia and Alaves leave the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla with at least a point this season and that’s putting pressure on Cadiz to get results in unlikely places such as this.

Head to Head

  • Last 4 Competitive Meetings: 2 Athletic Wins, 2 Cadiz Wins.
  • Cadiz somehow secured a 1-0 win in this fixture with just 9 men last season.
  • Athletic got revenge though by winning 4-0 in Cadiz later in the season.
  • The previous meetings came in the 2005/06 season and both produced 1-0 home wins.

Team News

Íñigo Martínez is suspended for Athletic. Dani Vivian, Peru Nolaskoain and Yuri Berchiche are injury absentees.

Tomás Alarcón is banned for Cadiz who are also missing Martín Calderón to injury.

Possible Lineups

Athletic Club vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Athletic Club 1-0 Cadiz

You can never totally write off Cadiz. They’ve shown time and time again that they can implement an effective counter-attacking gameplan on the road since they returned to the top flight last season. Athletic know that only too well but you feel like they will have learned their lesson and should be able to find an approach which will deliver the win here with in-form Iker Muniain likely to be the key man in breaking down the visiting defence.
