Real Madrid vs Shakhtar Donetsk Preview

Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk meet again in a fixture that has taught us to expect the unexpected over the past year or so. Los Blancos are hoping to take firm control of this group by putting three points on the board and they will fancy they can do that after a dominant display in Ukraine a fortnight ago.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side won that game 5-0 with Vini Junior’s Second Half brace setting Madrid firmly on their way to a convincing victory. However they don’t have to look too far back to realise they can’t afford to underestimate Shakhtar who won both meetings between the clubs in last season’s competition.

Real Madrid do still need to shake that tendency to slip up in the “easier” fixtures which plagued them under Zinedine Zidane during his final season at the club. Their only defeats so far this term have come at home to Moldovan minnows Sheriff in this competition and away to newly promoted Espanyol in LaLiga.

Overall though, the signs are relatively positive for Ancelotti’s Madrid second time around. They come into the game after a 2-1 win at Elche, with Vini again netting a brace. The Brazilian has had a sensational start to the season and Saturday also showcased they are capable of winning games without talisman Karim Benzema who was rested with a slight knock.

Benzema is expected to return here and that’s not good news for Shakhtar. They’ve had a few injury problems of their own this season and are not in a good position in this group at the halfway stage. They are yet to even score a goal in this season’s Champions League with their solitary point coming via a 0-0 home draw against Inter.

With Sheriff surprisingly on six points, Shakhtar are going to face a real battle just to make 3rd in this group and a crack at the Europa League in 2022. They have won all three domestic matches since that heavy loss in Kiev a fortnight ago, scoring nine times in the process but they’ve not looked anywhere near as dangerous on the European stage as they did last season and this is a game that Madrid should win.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 3 Real Madrid Wins, 2 Shakhtar Wins.
  • Real Madrid won 5-0 when the sides met a fortnight ago.
  • Shakhtar recorded 2-0 and 3-2 victories over Los Blancos last season.
  • They were 3-0 up at Half-Time when they visited Madrid on MD1 in last season’s group stage.

Team News

Los Blancos are missing Dani Ceballos, Gareth Bale and Mariano to injury. Isco, Rodrygo and Fede Valverde are doubts but Karim Benzema should return having been rested at the weekend.

Lassina Traoré and Pedrinho are both missing through injury for the away team.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid vs Shakhtar Donetsk Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 3-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Real Madrid were clearly in the mood to make amends for last season’s defeats against Shakhtar when the sides met in Kiev a fortnight ago and it’s hard to see them taking their eyes off the ball here. With something very close to their strongest XI available, this should result in a home win and a comfortable one at that.
