The latest chapter in what has turned into a fascinating saga between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid takes place this Wednesday at Anfield. In-form Liverpool are firmly in pole position in this group and could potentially secure qualification on the night if they can see off Diego Simeone’s side here.

They managed to do that in a thrilling game at the Wanda Metropolitano a fortnight ago. Having fallen two down inside fifteen minutes, you feared a bit for Atleti, but they came roaring back with a brace from Antoine Griezmann levelling the game. Just when it appeared the Frenchman was well on his way to winning back more hearts and minds of the fans that adored him before his move to Barcelona, Griezmann saw red in the Second Half and Liverpool found a late winner from the penalty spot via Mohamed Salah.

Anfield will bring back fond memories for Atleti of that memorable night two years ago, but they can’t afford to get nostalgic. 4 points from 3 games so far in this group isn’t a disastrous return in the circumstances. Milan are yet to even get off the mark so it looks like it will be between Atleti and Porto for 2nd and any kind of result would be a big bonus here for Los Rojiblancos.

Atleti come into the game after one of their strongest showings of the season. They beat an in-form Real Betis side 3-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano at the weekend and they look a much better side when they can call upon their first choice back three. That was far from the case in the first meeting with Liverpool but it should be here and that could be a significant factor in this game.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have been flying so far this season and just five days after the meeting in Madrid, they went to Old Trafford and hammered rivals Manchester United 5-0. They also appeared to be in cruise control early on at home to Brighton at the weekend with a 2-0 advantage after just 24 minutes but Liverpoool faded badly in that game with the Seagulls coming back to earn a 2-2 draw.

That should offer Atleti some encouragement heading into this trip. The pressure isn’t really on Liverpool any more in this group with 9 points already to their name putting them in a strong position to qualify. The opportunity to potentially win the group with two games to spare ought to spur them on though and with their key players fit and firing, it could be a difficult night for the visitors.

Head to Head

  • Liverpool won a 3-2 thriller in Madrid a fortnight ago.
  • However Atleti won both legs of the Champions League Last 16 tie between the sides in 2019/20.
  • They memorably won 3-2 in Extra Time at Anfield in the 2nd leg of that tie with Marcos Llorente scoring twice.
  • The most recent meetings prior to that came in the Europa League Semi-Finals in 2009/10 when Atleti won on away goals.

Team News

Liverpool’s selection problems are in midfield. James Milner and Naby Keita are injured while it’s unclear whether Thiago or Fabinho will be available to feature.

Antoine Griezmann is suspended for Atleti who are missing Thomas Lemar and Marcos Llorente to injury.

Possible Lineups

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid have shown they still have the quality to make life difficult for top European teams but when Liverpool are at their best, there are arguably no tougher tests in this competition. With no Griezmann, no Thomas Lemar and no Marcos Llorente, who almost single-handedly secured victory for Atleti on this ground in 2020, Atleti may struggle to get anything from this game.
