Rayo Vallecano vs Celta Vigo Preview

Falcao

Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo meet in the first of two Monday night games in LaLiga. Rayo are hoping to extend their extraordinary start on home soil with three more points against a Celta Vigo side that has blown hot and cold so far.

It’s played five, won five for Rayo at home this season. Nobody could have possibly predicted they’d have it so go, not least given the backdrop of fan boycotts and organisational problems that plagued the start of their top flight campaign. Andoni Iraola and his team deserve great credit for ignoring the usual Vallecas circus, as well as the pundits who almost universally tipped them for relegation.

The clearest evidence yet that they belong at this level came in their most recent home match, a 1-0 victory over Barcelona. While the Catalans have clearly got many problems of their own, Rayo once again showcased the belief that is flowing through this squad right now with a surprise win courtesy of another goal from Radamel Falcao. Only Sevilla can match their 100% home record heading into this fixture where Rayo have a realistic shot of making it 6 wins from 6 in their own stadium.

Celta Vigo will be hoping to be the first team to take points from Vallecas this term and they did win convincingly in Madrid just last Monday with a 3-0 success at Getafe. Santi Mina’s brace, either side of an Iago Aspas strike, was enough for Celta in that game but they are struggling to build any real momentum this season. Just three days later, they were brought back down to earth with a 2-0 defeat against Real Sociedad in rainy Vigo.

They’ve not had any significant injury problems this season and their limited summer business appeared pretty shrewd, so it’s a bit of a mystery why Celta are struggling to hit the heights of last season. Perhaps teams have figured them out a little bit while a slight dip in the levels of talisman Iago Aspas may also be a factor given the forward has always been so key to everything they’ve done in recent years.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Rayo Wins, 2 Celta Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Rayo have won all of their last 5 home games against Celta Vigo.
  • They scored 3+ goals in 4 of those games.
  • Celta last avoided defeat in Vallecas a decade ago when they won 3-1 in the Segunda Division.

Team News

Martín Merquelanz is sidelined for the hosts through injury.

Celta Vigo should be at full strength.

Predicted Rayo Starting Lineup:

Dimitrievski – Garcia, Catena, Saveljich, Balliu – Comesana, Ciss – Garcia, Trejo, Palazon – Falcao (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Celta Starting Lineup:

Dituro – Galan, Aidoo, Murillo, Mallo – Tapia – Cervi, Suarez, Mendez – Mina, Aspas (4-1-3-2)

Rayo Vallecano vs Celta Vigo Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Celta Vigo

It’s hard to go against Rayo in Vallecas right now. They did ride their luck a little against Barcelona but they’ve confidently dispatched weaker opponents this season and their confidence levels will be sky high heading into this. They may just have the beating of an inconsistent Celta Vigo side.
