Elche vs Real Madrid Preview

Elche stadium

Matchday 12 in LaLiga 2021/22 kicks off at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero with Real Madrid the visitors. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing midweek draw but it won’t be easy against an Elche side that is tough to beat at home.

Elche haven’t lost yet on home soil this season with 4 draws and 1 victory from their 5 home matches to date. That solitary win came against Celta Vigo earlier in the month but they’ve only taken a point from their subsequent 3 games, a disappointing return from a favourable looking schedule which has seen them face Rayo Vallecano, Espanyol and Alaves.

Fran Escriba will be hoping for a little bit more out of his team here and he’ll fancy they can ask a few questions of a Real Madrid defence that hasn’t always convinced this season. One positive in recent weeks has been the form of Dario Benedetto, a big name summer arrival, who has netted in each of Elche’s last two home fixtures and will surely relish the chance to take on Los Blancos.

Real Madrid come here reflecting on the highs of a Clasico win at Camp Nou and the lows of a goalless home draw against Osasuna in midweek. Despite having 17 shots and 75% of the possession, Los Blancos couldn’t find a way past Sergio Herrera in the Osasuna goal and the worry for Carlo Ancelotti may be that Elche will look to operate a similar gameplan here.

The pragmatic, counter-attacking style we saw from Madrid in Barcelona won’t work in most fixtures this season as there simply won’t be that kind of space to play in. It’s not as though Real Madrid are short on creativity in midfield but the likes of Vini Junior and Rodrygo aren’t quite as effective in games where the opposition drops deeper and it’ll be interesting to see how Escriba looks to approach this one.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Draw, 5 Real Madrid Wins.
  • This fixture finished last 1-1 season with Los Blancos winning the reverse clash 2-1 in Madrid.
  • Real Madrid have won the other 4 meetings this century.
  • All of those games were between 2013 and 2015 when Fran Escriba was also the coach of Elche.

Team News

Pablo Piatti is a doubt for Elche who should be at full strength otherwise.

Isco, Gareth Bale and Fede Valverde are still out for the visitors. Karim Benzema has not travelled and is being rested.

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Mojica, Bigas, Verdu, Palacios – Fidel, Mascarell, Guti, Pastore – Benedetto, Boye (4-4-2)

Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Mendy, Alaba, Militao, Carvajal – Camavinga, Casemiro, Kroos – Vini, Jovic, Rodrygo (4-3-3)

Elche vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 1-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid come into this game with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats from their last 6 in all competitions so they aren’t in sparkling form by any means. That should offer Elche plenty of reason to be positive and the hosts look capable of nicking something here to continue their unbeaten start at home.
