Levante vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Levante match action

Two sides who were involved in eventful weekend matches meet here. Levante are desperate to end their wait for a first win this season and they’ll be hoping to emulate Alaves who found their first points of the campaign in unlikely fashion against the defending champions.

Neutral fans of LaLiga would have been quite sad to see Paco Lopez depart Levante but if Sunday’s 5-3 defeat to Sevilla is anything to go by, they could still be a fun watch under the guidance of Javier Pereira. The new Levante boss wouldn’t have been thrilled by some of his team’s defending but he’d have been encouraged by his team’s ability to create chances and score goals against one of Spanish football’s best defences.

Jose Luis Morales netted a brace in that game and will continue to be key you’d imagine in Levante’s search for that elusive victory. They’ll have gone the equivalent of half a full season without a league win if they can’t find it here and it’s safe to say they could really use another shock victory over one of the “big three” clubs, something that has been a trademark of theirs in recent years.

Atletico Madrid will have other ideas but their recent performances suggest there is at least a chance for the hosts here. Diego Simeone’s side have only won 2 of their last 5 league games and were given a real scare by Real Sociedad at the Wanda Metropolitano at the weekend. Atleti were 2-0 down heading into the final half hour, but as has so often been the case, they were able to find salvation via the finishing ability of Luis Suarez with the Uruguayan netting a brace to ensure the game ended 2-2.

Simeone has a wealth of attacking options available to him but it may be the defence that is a bigger concern right now. They’ve conceded 5 goals in their last 2 matches, both at home, and you do fear there is a lack of cover in the centre-back positions which is making it tough for them to persist with the seemingly preferred 3-5-2 formation on a consistent basis.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Atleti Wins, 1 Levante Win, 2 Draws.
  • Levante were surprise 2-0 winners at the Wanda Metropolitano in the most recent meeting in February.
  • They’d gone 7 without a victory against Atleti prior to that.
  • The last 4 meetings in Valencia have produced 2 Atleti wins and 2 draws.

Team News

José Campaña and Shkodran Mustafi are still sidelined for Levante. Roger Marti is a doubt.

Marcos Llorente, Stefan Savic and Thomas Lemar are missing for Atleti due to injuries.

Predicted Levante Starting Lineup:

Fernandez – Clerc, Pier, Vezo, Miramón – Radoja, Melero, Bardhi – Morales, Soldado, De Frutos (4-3-3)

Predicted Atletico Madrid Starting Lineup:

Oblak – Hermoso, Gimenez, Felipe – Carrasco, Herrera, Koke, Trippier – Felix, Suarez, Correa (3-4-3)

Levante vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Levante 1-2 Atletico Madrid

This 18 game winless streak simply has to be playing on the minds of the Levante players by now. They have players capable of firing them to better results and out of the mess they find themselves in but they have leaked goals against the stronger sides and you fancy Atletico Madrid should collect three points from their trip to the Ciutat de Valencia this week.
