Mallorca vs Sevilla Preview

Sevilla travel to the Balearic Islands on Wednesday hoping for another away day success as they bid to lay the foundations for a possible title challenge. They have certainly done that so far and these are the kinds of games they need to be winning if they want to keep pace with the Madrid clubs over the course of the season.

Mallorca have been competitive on their own ground on their return to the top flight though. They’ve lost just one of their opening five home fixtures and were 1-0 winners against Levante in their last home outing. They showed further signs of progress at the weekend too as they raced into a 2-0 lead at Mestalla against Valencia and held onto that advantage heading into Stoppage Time. However their inexperience did show in the dying moments as Mallorca ended up conceding 93rd and 98th minute goals in a game they ended with 9 men.

That was certainly an opportunity lost but their ability to go to a place like Mestalla, create chances and score goals would have encouraged Luis Garcia. They may have to work harder for their openings in this game, although not if Sevilla defend like they did against Levante at the weekend.

Sevilla had only let in 3 league goals all season heading into that match, but they doubled that tally in a remarkable game which Julen Lopetegui’s side still won by a 5-3 margin. It was a much changed XI as the Sevilla boss rolled the dice to some extent with the likes of Munir, Oliver Torres and Marko Dmitrović getting rare starts. In the end it paid off as Sevilla got the three points despite a few nervy moments in the 2nd Half.

Like all the Spanish teams in Europe, this is a very busy autumn for Sevilla with four more games to squeeze into the space of twelve days before the next international break, starting with this one and culminating in the derby at Betis. We may see some light rotation here but it ought to be something closer to Sevilla’s strongest XI than what we saw at the weekend.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Mallorca Wins, 4 Sevilla Wins.
  • Sevilla won both matches 2-0 in the 2019/20 season when Mallorca were last in LaLiga.
  • Mallorca’s last victory over Sevilla came at home via a 2-1 margin in March 2013.
  • That was Sevilla’s only defeat across their last 14 trips to Mallorca.

Team News

Lee Kang-In and Rodrigo Battaglia are banned following weekend red cards. Take Kubo and Antonio Raíllo are also sidelined through injury for the hosts.

Papu Gómez and Karim Rekik are injury doubts for Sevilla who may rotate in some areas again.

Predicted Mallorca Starting Lineup:

Reina – Olivan, Russo, Valjent, Maffeo – Baba, Sevilla – Junior, Rodriguez, Ndiaye – Angel (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:

Bono – Acuna, Kounde, Carlos, Montiel – Jordan, Rakitic – Ocampos, Torres, Suso – Mir (4-2-3-1)

Mallorca vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-1 Sevilla

Mallorca will come into the game on a bit of a downer after their late collapse at Valencia and it may take them a while to find their stride again. They are capable of giving Sevilla a genuine test but the visitors look capable of nicking it by a goal with Lopetegui’s side generally quite strong on their travels.
