Villarreal vs Cadiz Preview

Villarreal stadium

We have the meeting of the two yellow submarines on Tuesday as Villarreal and Cadiz face off at the Ceramica. Both sides come into the game under a bit of pressure following damaging weekend defeats and it particularly feels like time for Villarreal to start delivering on the obvious quality that exists in their team.

11 points from 9 games is a very poor return for a team that won a European trophy last season and has shown they can mix it in the Champions League this. They’ve had one or two injuries to key players but that really shouldn’t be a valid excuse as there is sufficient depth in most areas to get significantly better results than they have been. For his critics, this season has certainly added further weight to the theory that Emery is a “cup manager”.

Villarreal were impressive in Switzerland last week, winning 4-1 against Young Boys in the Champions League but either side of that game, they’ve suffered league defeats against Osasuna and Athletic Club. They had something very close to their strongest eleven in Bilbao and it seems likely we will see a bit of rotation here for the visit of Cadiz with a few enforced changes too following injuries to Gerard Moreno and Juan Foyth.

The visitors may consider changes of their own following a poor run of form which has seen them score just one goal in their last five matches since claiming their solitary victory so far in Vigo. They did something they almost never do on Saturday by having more possession than their opponents but it didn’t help matters as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Alaves. Those kinds of results have to be a major source of concern for Alvaro Cervera.

In truth they simply don’t look like winning matches even in those key home games against bottom half teams. As a result, they are going to have to pull a lot of surprise results out of the bag, which they did manage to do last season, but it won’t be as simple this time around you sense. In upcoming games, they may look to try something different but in a tough away game like this, it’s hard to see them veering from the low possession, counter-attacking approach.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Villarreal Wins, 3 Draws.
  • The sides last met at the Ceramica in March with Villarreal running out 2-1 winners.
  • Cadiz haven’t won any of the 6 competitive meetings this century.
  • They last avoided defeat on this ground with a 1-1 draw in LaLiga in 2006.

Team News

Villarreal have lost both Gerard Moreno and Juan Foyth to hamstring injuries. Boulaye Dia is also expected to miss this one again.

Long-term absentee Jon Ander Garrido is Cadiz’s only confirmed absentee.

Predicted Villarreal Starting Lineup:

Rulli – Aurier, Mandi, Torres, Estupinan – Coquelin, Capoue, Parejo – Danjuma, Alcacer, Pino (4-3-3)

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Iza, Haroyan, Fali, Espino – Sanchez, Jonsson, Alarcon, Fernandez, Lozano – Sobrino (4-5-1)

Villarreal vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 2-1 Cadiz

Villarreal have enough lapses in concentration and moments of sloppiness to suggest Cadiz have every chance of nicking a goal on the break in this game. However Villarreal have too many good players for their domestic form not to pick up and even if they make four or five changes here, they should have enough quality to put three points on the board.
