The midweek action in LaLiga kicks off with something of a relegation six-pointer at Mendizorroza. Both Alaves and Elche are likely to be at least in the relegation picture come the latter stages of the season and both coaches will see this as a decent opportunity to put three priceless points on the board.

Alaves did just that at the weekend. Having lost 7 of their opening 8 fixtures, the pressure was mounting on Javi Calleja but his side went to Cadiz and claimed a rare win. Somewhat predictably it was Joselu who was largely responsible for that with the big striker scoring both goals in a 2-0 success. Alaves to some extent beat Cadiz at their own game with the Basque side having just 38% possession against a team that consistently posts the lowest figures in the league.

Alaves actually doubled their goal tally for the season in that game and it’s clear they will need other players to step up in the final third if they are going to avoid a relegation battle. Calleja will though be encouraged by improvements in their own half with just 3 goals conceded in their last 5 matches, suggesting they have become significantly tougher to break down when compared to some of their earlier matches this season.

As for Elche, they will travel north with mixed emotions following a 2-2 draw at home to Espanyol at the weekend. They led at the break through Lucas Boye’s goal but conceded twice in the space of a minute in the second half before grabbing a point late on via Dario Benedetto. The fact the Argentine was only introduced off the bench tells you that Elche do have options in the final third these days, moreso you’d have to say than their opponents in this game.

However they are a team that is considerably weaker on their travels when compared to life on their own patch. They’ve lost 4 of their 5 road games so far this season, with their solitary win coming against basement boys Getafe. Fran Escriba will be somewhat more optimistic of a result here though and they may need it to avoid slipping towards the bottom three given they have a tough home game against Real Madrid to come this weekend.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Alaves Wins, 3 Elche Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Elche haven’t conceded on any of their last 3 trips to this ground.
  • They were 2-0 winners here last season but lost the reverse fixture 2-0 in Elche.
  • Alaves last home win over Elche came via a 2-0 margin in the Segunda Division in 2008.

Team News

Alaves aren’t expected to change much following victory last time out.

Like their opponents, Elche have no significant injury problems but may opt for some light rotation.

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Navarro, Miazga, Laguardia, Duarte – Loum, Moya – Pellistri, Pons, Rioja – Joselu (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Barragan, Verdu, Bigas, Mojica – Fidel, Guti, Mascarell, Pastore – Perez, Benedetto (4-4-2)

Alaves vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Alaves 1-0 Elche

This is likely to be a tight game with little in the way of goalmouth action. Alaves appear to have settled on a more cautious approach and it has paid off with those couple of recent wins and you wouldn’t bet against them edging this too with home advantage and with renewed confidence following weekend success on the road.
