Cadiz vs Alaves Preview

Cadiz stadium

Cadiz and Alaves meet in an important game at the bottom of LaLiga this Saturday. The visitors are in deep trouble having lost 7 of their opening 8 games but Cadiz are only 4 points better off and defeat here really would signal trouble for the Andalusian side.

Cadiz’s solitary victory so far came away to Celta Vigo on matchday 5 where they won despite only having a 22% share of the ball. That figure rose to 45% on Monday night, an extremely high figure by Cadiz’s standards, but it wasn’t effective as they sank to a 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Espanyol. They’re sitting in 16th with just 7 points from 9 games as a result with the joint worst defensive record in the league which will be a slight concern for Alvaro Cervera.

They have problems at the other end too having failed to score in any of their last 3 home matches. They had just 2 attempts on goal in their last home outing – a 0-0 draw against Valencia. On the surface, there are plenty of things that suggest Cadiz are in for a relegation battle yet they are a team that frequently defies expectations and pulls out a result when they need it and a first home win of the season would be a huge boost if they can get it here.

Alaves’s need for the points are even greater. They looked like they were on course for a home draw against Real Betis on Monday night but were caught out by an 89th minute strike from Borja Iglesias, the only goal in the game. The pressure is right back on Javi Calleja, despite that 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid prior to the international break, the only points Alaves have collected yet this season.

Overall, this still doesn’t feel like a good fit. Calleja is somebody who has been schooled in the Villarreal way of doing things with all of his coaching experience coming at various levels with the Yellow Submarine. He doesn’t have the players to adopt a more eye-catching brand of football here though and it has been very direct at times with targetman Joselu winning 14 aerial challenges against Betis, the most any player has managed in a single game in LaLiga this season.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Cadiz Wins, 4 Draws.
  • 4 of the last 6 meetings have ended 1-1.
  • Cadiz won the other two, both at home, including a 3-1 win here last season.
  • Alaves haven’t beaten Cadiz since a 1-0 away win in 2004, having gone 9 winless games against the Andalusians since.

Team News

Cadiz are without long-term absentee Jon Ander Garrido while Jose Mari is a doubt.

Alaves should be at full strength here.

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Espino, Fali, Haroyan, Iza – Perea, Alarcon, Jonsson, Sanchez – Negredo, Sobrino (4-4-2)

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Duarte, Miazga, Laguardia, Navarro – Rioja, Pina, Moya, Mendez – Joselu, De La Fuente (4-4-2)

Cadiz vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Cadiz 0-0 Alaves

There’s not a great deal to choose between these teams and both look like they are going to be involved in the relegation scrap this season. It’s just hard to see there being many chances in this match with neither side really having the kind of quality creative player who could open it up and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if we got a third straight home goalless draw for Cadiz.
