Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad Preview

Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad clash in what on any other weekend might have been the standout fixture in LaLiga. It’s the defending champions against the leaders heading into matchday 10 and in some respects, it may be every bit as interesting as the Clasico that precedes it on Sunday.

The visitors could really announce themselves as serious title contenders by winning this game but Diego Simeone’s men will be determined to prevent that from happening. Atleti have at least had a bit of time to unwind and digest what was a remarkable match in the Champions League in midweek as they lost 3-2 at home to Liverpool with Antoine Griezmann scoring twice but then getting sent off for a high boot before the English side netted a late winner.

Atleti have a battle on to make the last 16 in Europe and that will be a big priority for them between now and the New Year. They will want to ensure they are firmly in the title race heading into 2022 too though and they’ve started pretty well in LaLiga, losing only once so far and they defeated Barcelona comfortably by a 2-0 margin in their most recent league outing.

Real Sociedad are hoping to sustain their bright start to the season but they also have their own European distractions. They claimed an important 1-0 win in Austria this week against Sturm Graz in the Europa League, their first victory in that competition so far this season. Alexander Isak netted the only goal of the game and the Swede is likely to spearhead La Real’s attack again here.

The visitors are hampered by the absence of star forward Mikel Oyarzabal while Martin Zubimendi is the latest addition to their lengthy injury list. Imanol is doing a good job of keeping them on track but they haven’t been that impressive in some of their recent league wins and you do fear a decline in form may be imminent if they continue to have so many absentees.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Atleti Wins, 1 Real Sociedad Win, 1 Draw.
  • Atletico Madrid have won 7 of their last 8 home games against Real Sociedad.
  • They won both meetings last season with 2-0 and 2-1 victories key in their ultimate title triumph.
  • Real Sociedad’s only previous point at the Wanda Metropolitano came on the final day of the delayed 2019/20 season when they sealed European qualification.

Team News

Marcos Llorente and Stefan Savic are both out injured for the home team but Jose Gimenez should return in defence.

Real Sociedad could be without as many as 8 players again with Martín Zubimendi the latest addition to their injury list. Mikel Oyarzabal is definitely out here.

Predicted Atleti Starting Lineup:

Oblak – Hermoso, Gimenez, Felipe – Carrasco, De Paul, Koke, Lemar, Trippier – Suarez, Griezmann (3-5-2)

Predicted Real Sociedad Starting Lineup:

Remiro – Gorosabel, Le Normand, Elustondo, Zaldua – Guevara, Merino, Silva – Januzaj, Isak, Portu (4-3-3)

Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Sociedad

Atletico Madrid should be able to field a stronger defence than they could in midweek when midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia had to fill in at centre-back. While Real Sociedad will certainly ask questions, Atleti have a bit more quality across the pitch and more options when it comes to bringing in fresh legs. They may have the edge over 90 minutes here.
