Young Boys vs Villarreal Preview
Villarreal travel to Switzerland on Wednesday in need of a win to maintain a realistic shot at qualification for the UEFA Champions League knockout stage. Young Boys are the opposition in what is a key game for both sides.
Unai Emery’s side certainly should have more than a point to show for their efforts in this competition so far. They drew 2-2 against Atalanta in an entertaining game at the Ceramica on their return to Europe’s top tier before suffering late heartbreak in Manchester on matchday 2. Villarreal could have been out of sight in a game they led through Paco Alcacer but ended up being pegged back by the Premier League side, eventually losing out to a dramatic 95th minute winner from Cristiano Ronaldo.
On paper, Villarreal now have all the ingredients to be a really strong side both at home and in Europe, but there are still a few too many setbacks for the liking of their supporters. Another came at the weekend when they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 at home by Osasuna in LaLiga despite Emery finally being able to name something close to his strongest XI with Gerard Moreno back in the team up front.
Young Boys were the rank outsiders in this group when the draw was made but they quickly signalled their intentions by shocking Manchester United in their opening game. They also pushed Atalanta pretty close in Italy, only going down 1-0 to the Serie A outfit on matchday 2 so it’s clear that David Wagner’s side are no pushovers.
Realistically though, these two games against Young Boys offer Villarreal their best chance of getting right into contention in this group. The Swiss champions are 3rd in their league at the moment and were held to a surprise draw by Luzern at home at the weekend. They are an attacking team by nature and were involved in three 3-2 wins in qualifying for the group stage, but understandably they’ve adopted a slightly more cautious approach against stronger opponents so far.
Head to Head
- This will be the first ever meeting.
Young Boys are missing six players to injury including centre-back Cédric Zesiger and forward Jean-Pierre Nsame.
Francis Coquelin is available following suspension in the last group game for Villarreal who should be at full strength.

Young Boys vs Villarreal Predictions
Score Prediction: Young Boys 1-2 Villarreal
Villarreal need to rediscover the magic that fired them to Europa League glory last season. They won away to several teams on a similar level to Young Boys during that campaign and with all their key men fit again, they look capable of recording an important win here in Zurich.
