Barcelona vs Dynamo Kiev Preview

Camp Nou

Barcelona face a must win Champions League home game on Wednesday against Dynamo Kiev. They do at least approach the game on the back of a much needed league victory but the pressure on Ronald Koeman to leave will be immense if they don’t back that up with three points in Europe here.

Barca did face Dynamo Kiev at the corresponding stage in last season’s group phase and had to work hard for a 2-1 win at Camp Nou before an easy 4-0 success in Ukraine. Nothing can be taken as a given with this current Barcelona side but there were plenty of positives at least on Sunday night as they came from behind to see off Valencia 3-1.

Ansu Fati’s return to fitness continued with another goal while Phillipe Coutinho was also on target off the bench which should do his shattered confidence levels a bit of good. There was even a first appearance in Barcelona colours for Sergio Aguero and that’s good news for Koeman and his team heading into a crunch week with the Clasico immediately following this match.

The Catalans are getting some bodies back at least and ought to fancy their chances of being too strong for Dynamo Kiev again. Dynamo Kiev are currently sitting in 3rd place with one point collecting in the group so far. That came via a 0-0 home draw against Benfica and is one more than Barcelona have currently got.

However Dynamo were hammered 5-0 in Munich by Bayern in their most recent Champions League outing. Realistically they are going to struggle to get out of this group, having failed to do that since 2015/16 in this competition. However they will sense weakness in Barcelona and will fancy they can take at least a point off them across the two games, which would be very damaging for the Catalan club’s chances of progression.

Dynamo come into the game after a 4-1 win at Lviv at the weekend and they are currently top of the Ukrainian Premier Division having conceded just three goals all season.

Head to Head

  • Barcelona have won all four meetings this century.
  • They recorded 2-1 and 4-0 wins over Dynamo in last season’s competition.
  • Barcelona also won both meetings in the 2009/10 group stage.
  • There were a host of meetings in the 90’s with a very strong Dynamo Kiev side recording 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Barcelona in the 1997/98 group stage.

Team News

Eric Garcia is banned for Barcelona who are missing Pedri and Ronald Araujo to injury.

Dynamo also have their fair share of injury issues right now and have a fresh doubt over forward Vladyslav Supriaga.

Predicted Barcelona Starting Lineup:

Ter Stegen – Alba, Pique, Lenglet, Dest – Gavi, Busquets, De Jong – Fati, Depay, Coutinho (4-3-3)

Predicted Dynamo Kiev Starting Lineup:

Boyko – Mykolenko, Shabanov, Zabarnyi, Tymchyk – Shaparenko, Sydorchuk – Pena, Buyalskiy, Tsygankov – Garmash (4-2-3-1)

Barcelona vs Dynamo Kiev Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 3-1 Dynamo Kiev

With some key men getting back to fitness, Barcelona should be stronger than we saw prior to the international break, although in truth that’s not saying much. We got a positive response from them to going down early at the weekend and that bodes well as it would’ve been easy for heads to instantly drop after some of their recent performances. They should have too much attacking quality for Dynamo here.
