Villarreal vs Osasuna Preview

Villarreal match action

Villarreal return from the international break with a home game against Osasuna on Sunday. It’s shaping up to be an exciting season at the Ceramica with the Yellow Submarine looking stronger even than last term when they broke their long wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League in Gdansk.

They’re hoping to make progress in the Champions League this season and Unai Emery will certainly have one eye on what feels like a “must win” trip to Switzerland this week to face Young Boys. However he ought to be confident after his side’s last two displays where they were excellent in an unfortunate defeat away to Manchester United before bouncing back with a 2-0 league win against Betis.

Arnaut Danjuma scored both goals in that game and already looks one of the signings of the summer having immediately settled into his new surroundings. Yeremi Pino is also showing signs of developing into a top player and it’s striking here that Villarreal won’t feel as though they simply have to rush the fit again Gerard Moreno back from injury after such a strong showing last time out. That certainly wouldn’t have been the case last term.

Osasuna are rarely easy to play against though and you can be sure Jagoba Arrasate will have a plan to counter Villarreal’s attacking threat. The visitors won their final two games before the break to climb up to 5th in LaLiga with an impressive return of 14 points from their first 8 league games.

Arrasate is one of the most underrated coaches around in Spain at the moment having done a terrific job in Pamplona over a number of years now. This is certainly the most competitive squad he’s had to work with and while it’s left him in a relatively new position of having to leave good players out on a regular basis, you can’t argue with the results they are getting. They’ve won all three away matches so far this season but it’s a big ask for them to keep that sequence going here.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Villarreal Wins, 2 Osasuna Wins.
  • All of the last 7 meetings have seen both teams score.
  • Villarreal have won 3 of their last 4 home games against Osasuna.
  • However the exception was last season when they were beaten 2-1.

Team News

Boulaye Dia and Samu Chukwueze are injury doubts for the hosts. Gerard Moreno has recovered from injury and should be involved.

Osasuna are missing Jonás Ramalho to injury. Aridane Hernández and Ante Budimir are rated doubtful.

Predicted Villarreal Starting Lineup:

Rulli – Moreno, Torres, Albiol, Foyth – Parejo, Capoue, Trigueros – Danjuma, Alcacer, Pino (4-3-3)

Predicted Osasuna Starting Lineup:

Herrera – Sanchez, D. Garcia, Hernandez, Vidal – Brasanac, Torro, Moncayola – R. Garcia, Kike, Torres (4-3-3)

Villarreal vs Osasuna Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 2-1 Osasuna

Osasuna are in great form on their travels but this may be a challenge too far against a strong Villarreal side that has finally broken out of their drawing run over the last month. The hosts may have too much quality over 90 minutes for the Pamplona side and may be less wasteful in front of goal now Gerard Moreno is fit again, although he may only feature from the bench here with a big European game coming up.
