Espanyol vs Cadiz Preview

LaLiga Matchday 8 concludes with a clash between Espanyol and Cadiz at the RCDE Stadium. Both sides will see it as a chance to put some much needed points on the board and the two share similar ambitions this season of trying to steer clear of the relegation scrap.

Espanyol look perhaps capable of doing a bit more than that but on their first season back at this level, staying afloat will be the number one priority. After a slow start, there have been some major positives in recent weeks and they went into the international break on the back of a shock 2-1 win over Real Madrid. Goals from Raul De Tomas and Aleix Vidal secured victory and they could have led by more at one stage but in the end Vicente Moreno would have been impressed that his side managed to hang on and fight off a late rally from the visitors.

Home form you sense is going to be key for Espanyol this season. Their two wins so far this term have both come at the RCDE Stadium and this fixture offers them the chance to make it three on the bounce at home. They’ll be looking to Raul De Tomas for inspiration again but do still have a few injury problems which haven’t cleared up despite the long break.

Cadiz are doing better in that regard but there are more doubts as to whether they have the kind of quality needed to steer well clear of trouble. They weren’t great last time out, having just two attempts on goal in the 0-0 home draw against Valencia but they continue to get results despite at times appearing to offer precious little in terms of genuine quality.

Alvaro Negredo, key for Cadiz last season, has only netted one goal so far and it’s a big ask to expect him to fire them to safety at the age of 36. Their other forwards aren’t showing a great deal of goal threat either but in fairness they are largely having to feed off scraps but it’s most likely going to take many more bad results before Alvaro Cervera opts to alter an approach which was largely responsible for keeping Cadiz up last season on their return to the Primera.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Espanyol Wins, 3 Cadiz Wins.
  • The sides last met in the Copa del Rey in 2018 with both sides winning the home legs of a two-legged tie.
  • Prior to that, the clubs hadn’t met since 4 meetings in the 2005/06 season.
  • Cadiz did the double over Espanyol in LaLiga that season but were still relegated at the end of it.

Team News

Javier Puado is out injured for Espanyol. Aleix Vidal, Fernando Calero and Yangel Herrera are doubts.

Jon Ander Garrido is the only absentee for the away team.

Predicted Espanyol Starting Lineup:

Lopez – Pedrosa, Cabrera, Gomez, Gil – Bare – Embarba, Darder, Melendo, Vidal – R.D.T. (4-1-4-1)

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Espino, Fali, Haroyan, Akapo – Perea, Alarcon, Jonsson, Salvi – Lozano, Negredo (4-4-2)

Espanyol vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Espanyol 2-0 Cadiz

There’s not much separating a lot of teams in this league from mid-table down but there are a few teams that have one or two players who look like they will score goals and offer a consistent attacking threat and Espanyol fall into that category. They will be full of belief after that win over Real Madrid and may have the edge here against Cadiz.
