Sevilla travel to Balaidos this weekend, aiming to build on a strong start to the season by moving level on points with the Madrid clubs. They face a Celta Vigo side that hasn’t convinced yet this term and one that will be hoping to find some rhythm and better form following the latest international break.

Celta slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Elche last time out having won their previous two matches to finally start climbing away from the foot of the table. Those wins did come against struggling sides in the shape of Levante and Granada with Denis Suarez’s late winner defeating the Andalusians although even in victory Celta have struggled to hit the heights of last term.

Their struggles are a bit of a mystery in many respects. They held onto all of their key players in the summer whilst adding the talented Javi Galan in what felt like a real coup. New goalkeeper Matias Dituro has also done well with some key penalty saves but somehow Celta just haven’t been as good with a decline in the form of talisman Iago Aspas certainly a factor in that.

Sevilla will be hoping to take advantage here. They will be forced into breaking up their trusted central defensive pairing with Diego Carlos suspended after he saw red late on in the 1-0 defeat at Granada last time out. That was Sevilla’s first loss of the season and it was a very disappointing way for Julen Lopetegui’s side to go into the international break.

They should have got something from that game in truth but were a bit wasteful in front of goal and will be hoping to find their shooting boots again here in another game where they ought to get chances. Lopetegui will need to consider resting his South American internationals with a very big Champions League trip to Lille coming up on Wednesday. Sevilla are yet to win in that competition so they really do need a result in France and may prioritise that game by rotating a bit here.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Celta Wins, 3 Sevilla Wins, 1 Draw.
  • There were 13 goals in the two meetings last season.
  • Sevilla won 4-3 in Vigo and 4-2 at the RSP.
  • They had however lost on their previous 3 league visits to Balaidos.

Team News

Celta are expected to be at full strength with the exception of Renato Tapia although confusion surrounds the extent of his injury.

Diego Carlos is banned for Sevilla. Marcos Acuna and Papu Gomez are returning from international duty in South America and may not be involved.

Predicted Celta Vigo Starting Lineup:

Dituro – Galan, Murillo, Araujo, Mallo – Beltran – Nolito, Suarez, Mendez – Mina, Aspas (4-1-3-2)

Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:

Bono – Augustinsson, Rekik, Kounde, Navas – Jordan, Rakitic, Fernando – Ocampos, En-Nesyri, Suso (4-3-3)

Celta Vigo vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Celta 2-2 Sevilla

Neither side has really played their best football yet this season although Sevilla have at least managed to get results. They will be the favourites in this one but a couple of likely defensive changes may unsettle things a bit at the back and Celta should get openings which may allow them to pick up a point.
