Rayo Vallecano vs Elche Preview

Estadio Vallecas

Rayo Vallecano entertain Elche in the early game on Sunday in LaLiga. Rayo have made a stunning start to the season and on paper this is another really good chance for them to put another three points on the board. They’ll climb into the top four if they can do that but they are up against an Elche side that looks to be made of sterner stuff this season.

Rayo have been the surprise package so far in LaLiga 2021/22. Under Andoni Iraola’s guidance they’ve defied preseason expectations that they’d be found seriously wanting at this level, to already record four victories. Three of those have come in Vallecas where they have a 100% record this term, notching up an impressive 10 goals and only conceding once in their three home games to date.

The goalscoring heroics of Radamel Falcao will draw the headlines but the Colombian’s international commitments and indeed age suggests he may not be ready to start this game after Colombia’s Thursday night fixture in Barranquilla. It hasn’t been all about him though with Alvaro Garcia also shining as joint top scorer with 3 goals meanwhile Oscar Trejo has impressed in an advanced midfield role and has scored twice.

As for Elche, they went into the international break on a positive note, beating Celta Vigo 1-0 at home. That match saw a first goal for summer signing Dario Benedetto and there are promising signs that he and Lucas Perez may forge a strong strike pairing. Certainly they should carry a greater goal threat than last season when their forward players largely failed to fire.

They are operating a 3-5-2 system and much of their width comes from the wing-backs. One man who has really caught the eye so far is Johan Mojica with the Colombian getting back to his best form with some fine displays on the left flank. Elche have lost 3 of their 4 away games so far but did record a 1-0 victory at Getafe and currently are relatively well placed with some breathing space on the relegation zone.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Rayo Vallecano Win, 3 Elche Wins, 2 Draws.
  • The sides met in the Copa del Rey last season with Rayo winning 2-0 on this ground.
  • The most recent league meetings came in the 2019/20 Segunda Division and included a 3-2 Elche win in Vallecas.
  • They’ve won on 3 of their last 5 league trips to this corner of Madrid, losing only once.

Team News

Martín Merquelanz is injured for the hosts. Radamel Falcao is unlikely to be ready to play 90 minutes after his international involvement and may start on the bench.

Pedro Bigas is injured for Elche. They will also monitor both Enzo Roco and Johan Mojica after international trips to South America that involved Thursday night fixtures.

Predicted Rayo Vallecano Starting Lineup:

Dimitrievski – Garcia, Catena, Saveljich, Balliu – Comesana, Ciss – Garcia, Trejo, Palazon – Guardiola (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Gonzalez, Verdu, Roco – Mojica, Fidel, Mascarell, Guti, Josan – Perez, Benedetto (3-5-2)

Rayo Vallecano vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-0 Elche

Rayo are on a roll at the moment and you wouldn’t bet against them in Vallecas against almost anyone right now. This hot streak surely will end sooner or later and they are likely to fall down the table but they are playing well enough to get the better of an Elche side that rarely travels well.
