Elche vs Celta Vigo Preview

Elche stadium

Elche and Celta Vigo meet this Sunday in a game which both sides will regard as winnable. Elche started the season quite positively but are hoping to bounce back from successive defeats here while Celta Vigo have done the opposite with back-to-back wins for them after a very slow start to the campaign.

In fairness to Elche, their last two games have both been tough ones. They were soundly beaten 4-1 at Villarreal before a 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad last weekend. Fran Escriba may though have been slightly disappointed with the performance given La Real’s injury problems which left them fielding a number of B team players in the game.

Escriba’s success since returning to Elche has largely been at the Estadio Martínez Valero and this will be quite a special occasion for both him and the supporters with a full capacity possible for the first time since Elche’s return to the top flight. The Elche fans will be hoping the team can deliver on the increased attacking potential that exists following some smart recruitment but they have only managed to score 4 goals in 7 games so far this season in LaLiga.

In terms of clinicalness, Celta Vigo certainly have the edge with more goal threats in their team. Iago Aspas and Santi Mina are now a relatively established strike pairing but it was Denis Suarez who popped up with the winner late on against Granada on Monday night. That made it two wins from two to the delight of everyone inside Balaidos and they were pretty good value for the win which wasn’t necessarily the case at Levante the previous week.

Winning always breeds confidence and back-to-back clean sheets is also a positive sign for Chacho Coudet and his team. On paper they have enough quality to climb this league and push on towards the European places with new signings such as Javi Galan and Matias Dituro potentially helping them to go the extra mile this season and clinch one of those European slots.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Elche Wins, 2 Celta Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Celta Vigo are unbeaten in the last 4 meetings.
  • They drew 1-1 here last season and won 3-1 in Vigo.
  • Elche haven’t beaten Celta since two 1-0 wins during the 2013/14 season.

Team News

Pedro Bigas and Jony are both out for the hosts. Lucas Boye is a doubt.

Nestor Araujo, Santi Mina and Joseph Aidoo are rated doubtful for the visitors.

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Mojica, Diego Gonzalez, Verdu, Palacios – Piatti, Mascarell, Guti, Fidel – Benedetto, Perez (4-4-2)

Predicted Celta Starting Lineup:

Dituro – Galan, Murillo, Araujo, Mallo – Tapia – Nolito, Suarez, Mendez – Mina, Aspas (4-1-3-2)

Elche vs Celta Vigo Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 1-1 Celta

Celta Vigo have a bit of momentum now and look the team more capable of winning this. However Elche are really tough to beat at home and have already held the likes of Sevilla this season in front of their own fans. They may have enough to take a point from this one.
