AC Milan vs Atletico Madrid Preview
It’s only matchday 2 in the Champions League group stage but this already feels like a really important game for Atletico Madrid. With only one point on the board and a double-header against Liverpool to follow, they really need to get at the very least a point from their trip to San Siro.
To get that, they will most likely need to play considerably better than they have done in recent games. Their last two league matches have been against the bottom two in LaLiga. Atleti made very hard work of their derby at Getafe last week, with a late brace from Luis Suarez needed to turn a potential defeat into a 2-1 victory. There was no late escape in Vitoria at the weekend though as Diego Simeone’s side slumped to a 1-0 loss against Alaves.
Having been held to a 0-0 home draw by Porto in their opening Champions League game, there is pressure on Atletico to get it right and quick if they are going to build on the success of last season. This isn’t a forgiving kind of group and you wonder if Diego Simeone may delay his so far unsuccessful attempt to bed Antoine Griezmann back into this team in this game, and revert to the side that clinched the league title last term.
A trip to Milan in the Champions League may have been one of the most daunting prospects in European football, ten or twenty years ago. However they are very much in the process of trying to reestablish themselves as a major European power and that will take time. This is their first Champions League campaign since 2013/14 when they were convincingly knocked out by Atleti in the last 16 stage.
It may not be a AC Milan side for the ages but the early signs this season are that it’s a competitive one. They’ve won 5 of their 6 league games so far and at least look capable of competing for the Italian title this term. In Europe, they started with a tough trip to Anfield but gave Liverpool a tough game, only going down 3-2 in a match they briefly led thanks to strikes from Ante Rebic and Real Madrid loanee Brahim Diaz.

AC Milan vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: AC Milan 1-1 Atletico Madrid
This promises to be another close game involving Atletico Madrid. It’s a competitive Milan side they will face but Diego Simeone’s team are experienced European campaigners and have faced much sterner challenges. They should be capable of getting a point to take back to the Spanish capital.
