Rayo Vallecano vs Cadiz Preview

Falcao

Rayo Vallecano are back in action this Sunday and gunning to make it three straight wins in LaLiga. They have been something of a revelation so far and will see no reason why they can’t keep their bright start up against a Cadiz side that they might have expected to be competing with against relegation this term.

It’s inevitable that Rayo will sooner or later experience a dip in form but for now they will gladly keep riding this wave and try to accumulate as many points as possible while confidence is high. They went to San Mames in midweek and came away with a 2-1 victory thanks to a Stoppage Time winner from Radamel Falcao, an instant hit with the Vallecas faithful having scored in both of his opening two appearances for Rayo.

Their success on the pitch does rather mask the deeper issues off it with fans furious at the lack of season tickets and multi-hour queues for last weekend’s home game against Getafe. However, there is plenty to be excited about with Andoni Iraola getting his tactics right and making a big impression on the top flight stage.

Cadiz head into this game having enjoyed a better week or so. They claimed their first victory of the new season away to Celta Vigo on matchday 5 before holding Barcelona to a draw in midweek. That was the first game since their promotion in 2020 where we had what felt like a big crowd at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla and Cadiz supporters will be a real asset to the top flight and could make a real difference to their team’s chances of beating the drop again.

They could easily have edged that game as they created arguably the better opportunities against Barcelona and we even saw a slight shift in style with many more passes finding their target than they did in the win at Celta where Cadiz had a pass completion rate of just 45%. They will most likely try to hit Rayo on the break at pace and it’ll be interesting to see which style prevails over 90 minutes.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Rayo Win, 1 Cadiz Win, 4 Draws.
  • All of the last 4 meetings have been drawn.
  • We’ve not had a winner in this fixture since the 2016/17 Segunda Division season when both teams won their home matches.
  • Cadiz haven’t won on any of their last 5 trips to Vallecas.

Team News

Martín Merquelanz is the only definite absentee for the hosts but Oscar Trejo is a doubt.

Fali picked up a serious looking injury on Thursday night and is out here along with Jon Ander Garrido. Jose Mari is a doubt.

Predicted Rayo Vallecano Starting Lineup:

Dimitrievski – Garcia, Catena, Saveljich, Balliu – Comesana, Ciss – Garcia, Lopez, Palazon – Falcao (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Espino, Chust, Haroyan, Iza – A. Fernandez, Alarcon, Jonsson, Salvi – Lozano, Negredo (4-4-2)

Rayo Vallecano vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Cadiz

Right now Rayo just look full of belief and confidence and having recorded convincing wins in their last two home games, they look capable of having the edge here too. Falcao may come in for his first start and that alone will lift this crowd who may just inspire Rayo on to another victory.
