Real Madrid vs Mallorca Preview

Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s late goal flurry in Valencia sent them to the top of LaLiga and they’ll be hoping to stay there by seeing off Mallorca on Wednesday night back at the Bernabeu. The visitors have made a bright start but will see any kind of result as a huge bonus here.

This is only Real Madrid’s second match back at their famous old ground which has undergone extensive renovation works during the pandemic. The first was not without hitches. They trailed 2-1 at the break against Celta Vigo with their defensive issues again pretty apparent before coming back to win. Carlo Ancelotti is clearly keen to try and improve in that area of the pitch which appears like it could be Madrid’s main achilles heel this season.

Things are looking brighter in the final third though and that’s largely thanks to the form of Vinicius. He was pivotal in the late comeback win at Valencia at the weekend, scoring the first goal with the aid of a deflection, before setting up the imperious Karim Benzema for the winner against Los Che. This might under normal circumstances be the kind of game where Ancelotti might consider resting Benzema but you wonder if he will be willing to risk it given how important the Frenchman is to this team.

Mallorca don’t really have one attacking player that they are totally dependent on with coach Luis Garcia still in the process of trying to figure out his best system and just who fits where. He may see this as something of a free hit and we may see some of his other summer signings who have yet to feature much get more game-time, particularly with a few injury problems hampering them right now.

Overall, Mallorca have made a strong start on their return to the top tier. They’ve only lost once so far and with just three goals conceded in five games, it’s clear they have the kind of defensive foundations that ought to give them a good chance of beating the drop. They’ve not been quite so impressive since the international break though, losing 2-0 at Athletic before a 0-0 draw at home to Villarreal where they were perhaps a little fortunate to take a point.

Real Madrid vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-0 Mallorca

Real Madrid may have to be a bit patient here as Mallorca aren’t conceding many goals but over the course of 90 minutes their superior quality ought to show and Carlo Ancelotti’s very bright start to the season is likely to continue with another victory.

  1. Not having the centre back pairing of Ramos and Varane has contributed to an initial weakness in defence..Hopefully the newcomers will settle in and understanding established.
