Espanyol vs Alaves Preview
This is a really important game for both sides who are among a group of seven teams in LaLiga yet to record a victory heading into matchday 6. Alaves haven’t even picked up a point so even a draw would represent progress for them and they’d most likely settle for that.
There is no real sense that Espanyol are in real danger yet or that coach Vicente Moreno is under any pressure. The good work he did last season should ensure Espanyol will allow him to continue this project even if their slow start does continue but they do need to show a bit more as they bid to prove they belong at this level.
Espanyol come into this one in better spirits after Leandro Cabrera’s 96th minute equaliser rescued a point from their trip to Real Betis. They’d conceded an even later goal to lose the previous weekend at home to Atletico Madrid so Espanyol fans have experienced contrasting emotions over the past week or so. Their only home games so far have been against sides expected to be in the top six come May so this really is by far their best opportunity yet to get that first victory.
Alaves have looked really unimpressive losing all of their four matches including a 2-0 home defeat against local rivals Osasuna last time out. They look a bit short on ideas and have a coach who you sense doesn’t fully believe in the style they are trying to play. They played quite directly into striker Joselu in that game with the forward winning 13 aerial challenges, the most of any player in LaLiga on matchday 5, but it was to no avail with little in the way of support coming from the other attacking players.
The problem really appears to be that Alaves just don’t have the personnel to adopt the kind of style Calleja used to employ at Villarreal. His more technically gifted players are a bit younger and perhaps not quite ready to really shine at this level and it leaves Alaves in a really worrying situation with the transfer window shut and doubts throughout the team.

Espanyol vs Alaves Predictions
Score Prediction: Espanyol 2-0 Alaves
This should be the top flight victory that Espanyol and their supporters have been longing for. They are struggling with one or two injury problems but with the likes of Adrian Embarba and Raul De Tomas on the pitch, they carry much more goal threat and they should have the edge on a poor looking Alaves side.
