Rayo Vallecano vs Getafe Preview

Rayo Vallecano match action

Saturday’s action in LaLiga starts with a Madrid derby in Vallecas. It’s a bigger game for the visitors in truth with Getafe yet to pick up a single point so far this season. If that sequence extends beyond this game, you’d already start to fear for the recently appointed Michel in his second spell at the club.

There are no such worries for Andoni Iraola. His Rayo Vallecano side have vastly exceeded the admittedly low expectations so far this season. While their points tally only reads 4 points from 4 games, their last two games have offered real hope that they have the kind of quality needed to compete at this level. They thumped an out of sorts Granada 4-0 in their last home game before drawing 1-1 at Levante last time out.

They probably should have won on their trip to Valencia too. Rayo had more shots than any other team in LaLiga on matchday 4 and were the biggest xG under-performers with pretty much every metric suggesting they should have won the game. They’ll be hoping to build on that momentum in a match which could see Radamel Falcao make his eagerly awaited debut, most likely off the bench.

Looking at Getafe’s inability to score goals, you have to think a player like Falcao might have been just what they needed too. They’ve only scored once so far this season in four games, with every one ending in defeat. There were some positive signs in their opening matches but the result was all that really mattered in Monday’s home game with Elche and it was Getafe’s worst performance of the season so far.

Michel opted to switch to a 3-5-2 system but it really wasn’t effective and they struggled to create any clear openings against one of the relegation favourites. Up against another here, it’s really not too premature to suggest this is a game Michel at the very least must avoid defeat in. He desperately needs one or two of his players to step up and put a big performance in, as some considerably tougher games follow this one.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Rayo Wins, 4 Getafe Wins.
  • Getafe won both meetings during the 2018/19 season, Rayo’s last in the top flight.
  • Rayo have won 4 of their last 5 home games against Getafe overall though – all by 2-0 margins.
  • There have been 4 red cards in the last 5 meetings in Vallecas.

Team News

Martín Merquelanz is the only doubt for Rayo. Fellow new signing Radamel Falcao may feature off the bench.

Mauro Arambarri is missing through injury for Getafe. David Timor is perhaps the man most likely to fill that place and a switch back to 4-4-2 is possible after a poor showing last time out.

Predicted Rayo Starting Lineup:

Dimitrievski – Garcia, Catena, Saveljich, Balliu – Comesana, Ciss – Garcia, Trejo, Nteka – Guardiola (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Soria – Olivera, Cuenca, Djene, Suarez – Jankto, Timor, Maksimovic, Alena – Sandro, Mata (4-4-2)

Rayo Vallecano vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-0 Getafe

Rayo Vallecano are not only getting results but they are playing really well and of the two teams here, they are the only that really looks like creating chances and scoring goals. Whether they can keep that up across the duration of the season is perhaps more doubtful but for now they are causing problems for top flight defences and they could pile on the misery for Getafe and Michel here.
