Mallorca vs Villarreal Preview

Mallorca LaLiga stadium

Sunday’s action in LaLiga commences in Palma de Mallorca with Villarreal the visitors. Both sides have made some exciting summer signings and with a busy week coming up, we may see a few more of them blooded as both coaches look to manage the workload on their players, particularly Unai Emery whose side were in Champions League action in midweek.

That’s less of an issue for Mallorca but Luis Garcia will still be in the process of trying to find out what his best XI is going to be this season. Right now it’s doubtful he even has one in mind as there is so much competition for places after a large number of fresh faces came in during the window. They got off to a terrific start even without some of those players featuring much with 7 points from their opening 3 games but Mallorca did sink to a 2-0 defeat against Athletic Club last weekend.

Garcia is unlikely to make any radical alterations following that but he may shake things up slightly here. Fresh options include Lee Kang-in and Matthew Hoppe who could both offer something different in the final third. However if there is one player who he is going to build a team around, you sense it is still most likely going to be Kubo who impressed at the back-end of the 2019/20 season with Mallorca and will be eager to get his career back on track after a tough time last term.

Villarreal will provide Mallorca with a real test and they come into this game after an entertaining return to Champions League football. They came from behind to lead Atalanta at the Ceramica but ultimately had to settle for a 2-2 draw in an open game which also saw another goal for summer signing Arnaut Danjuma.

Significantly Villarreal were able to welcome back Dani Parejo into the fold for that game and he certainly makes a big difference whenever he plays in terms of the creativity he brings to the table. The Yellow Submarine missed him in the opening three weeks in LaLiga and had to settle for three draws with a late own goal cruelly denying them victory at the Wanda Metropolitano on MD3. Villlarreal’s match last weekend was postponed so to some extent they already have quite a bit of catching up to do on their likely rivals for a top six or possibly even top four finish.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Villarreal Wins, 2 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Mallorca have won 3 of their last 4 home games against Villarreal, drawing the other.
  • They won 3-1 when Villarreal visited in LaLiga 2019/20.
  • That was the only goal Villarreal have scored in those 4 trips but they have been dominant in recent meetings at the Ceramica.

Team News

Antonio Sanchez is out for Mallorca who also have doubts over Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta and Antonio Raíllo.

Samu Chukwueze and Dani Raba may both be missing for the visitors. Sergio Asenjo is in contention to replace Gerónimo Rulli in goal.

Predicted Mallorca Starting Lineup:

Reina – Olivan, Valjent, Raillo, Maffeo – Sevilla, Baba – D. Rodriguez, Kubo, Mboula – Nino (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Villarreal Starting Lineup:

Asenjo – Pedraza, Torres, Albiol, Foyth – Parejo, Capoue, Trigueros – Danjuma, Alcacer, Moreno (4-3-3)

Mallorca vs Villarreal Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-2 Villarreal

Mallorca’s early bubble burst last weekend in Bilbao and with another tough game here, you sense the harsh reality of life in the top flight may be about to kick in. Mallorca have the quality to stay in this league but it may take time for Luis Garcia to figure out just how to fit his many pieces best into place and they could come unstuck here against a strong Villarreal side.
