Elche vs Levante Preview

There’s something of a derby clash in the Valencian region as Elche entertain Levante this weekend in LaLiga. These sides aren’t fierce rivals but there should still be a good atmosphere at the Martínez Valero with Elche fans surely feeling as positive as they have done for many a year.

Coaches returning to former clubs in truth often doesn’t work out but Fran Escriba is hoping to rewrite the narrative on that. Having guided Elche to safety against the odds last season, he has been helped by some ambitious recruitment and his team suddenly look capable of kicking on this season and being more competitive in most of their fixtures.

Elche were good value for a 1-0 win at Getafe on Monday night. Substitute Lucas Perez scored the only goal of what wasn’t a particularly thrilling game. That made it 5 points from 4 games so far this term for Escriba’s side and they still have Javier Pastore up their sleeve to incorporate into this team. The former Argentina international didn’t travel to Madrid but could feature during this upcoming busy week when we have a full midweek fixture list in LaLiga.

As for Levante, they are one of a number of teams still waiting for that first win of the 2021/22 season. They have picked up three draws, so there is certainly no reason to panic, however they weren’t particularly convincing last time out against Rayo Vallecano. The newly promoted team left feeling they should have won the game with Levante allowing their opponents to get away 22 shots on goal, something which would have disappointed Paco Lopez.

Disappointingly for Levante, they’ve lost key midfielder José Campaña to another injury. With Enis Bardhi and Jorge De Frutos also sidelined at the moment, you have to wonder where the creativity is going to come from. They are a team that usually doesn’t struggle to create chances and is happy to adopt an open approach, but Lopez may need to tweak his tactics in the upcoming games if Levante are going to secure good results.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Elche Wins, 2 Levante Wins, 2 Draws.
  • The sides met in a pre-season game last month with Levante winning 2-1.
  • Elche took 4 points from the 2 league meetings last season.
  • Levante’s last win here was by a 1-0 margin in the Segunda in 2016.

Team News

Pedro Bigas is out for Elche while Lucas Boye is a doubt but Lucas Perez may come into the team in any case.

Roberto Soldado, José Campaña, Jorge De Frutos and Enis Bardhi are all sidelined through injury for the visitors.

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Roco, Gonzalez, Verdu – Mojica, Mascarell, Guti, Fidel, Josan – Perez, Benedetto (3-5-2)

Predicted Levante Starting Lineup:

Fernandez – Clerc, Mustafi, Vezo, Miramon – Morales, Martinez, Malsa, Melero – Roger, Gomez (4-4-2)

Elche vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 2-1 Levante

Elche have been pretty strong at home since Fran Escriba took charge and they may just have enough to secure back-to-back victories here which would be a real platform from which to build. Levante’s midfield injury issues are a real concern for them and they continue to allow their opponents to have too many chances so this could be another positive day for Elche.
