The late game on Saturday in LaLiga is a derby clash in Vitoria as Osasuna pay Alaves a visit. It’s a very important game for the home team who are yet to pick up a point this season. Javier Calleja will know that patience tends to run out quite quickly in these parts with a host of Alaves coaches dismissed in recent years and he could really do with a win here.

Alaves head into matchday 5 propping up the table although they have only played 3 matches so far. Real Madrid and more worryingly Real Mallorca both claimed victories at Mendizorroza before Alaves succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at Valencia in their last fixture. That was a poor showing from the Basque club as they fell behind in just the 3rd minute and never seriously looked like taking anything back to Vitoria.

That was three weeks ago now after Alaves’ matchday four game was called off. It’s not exactly ideal conditions to have such a long break, so early in the season. It has given Calleja more time on the training ground to try and get his ideas across and to hopefully better bed in some of the new arrivals. However these are worrying times for Alaves who look to have problems at both ends of the pitch.

Osasuna by contrast have made more of a mixed start with 5 points from 4 games. They were also beaten by Valencia in their most recent game, crashing to a heavy 4-1 home defeat at El Sadar. That’s most unlike Osasuna although they did actually only give up less than one xG in that game which suggests the scoreline flattered the visitors to a large extent.

They aren’t a team that you associate with conceding a lot of goals with the bigger questions usually at the other end of the pitch. Jagoba Arrasate’s selections do sometimes frustrate anyone hoping to see Osasuna throw a bit more caution to the wind. He does have plenty of options now but opted to leave Chimy Avila, Roberto Torres, Ante Budimir and new arrival Javier Ontiveros on the bench last time out. Those are all players capable of making a difference in the final third and it’ll be interesting to see how the Osasuna boss manages to fit the pieces together as the season progresses.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Alaves Win, 4 Osasuna Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Osasuna have won 1-0 on each of their last 3 trips to Vitoria.
  • Alaves haven’t avoided defeat in this fixture since a 3-0 win in 2015.
  • They last beat Osasuna by a 1-0 margin in November 2016.

Team News

Pere Pons is the main injury doubt for Alaves.

Kike Barja is the only definite absentee for the visitors.

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Duarte, Lejeune, Miazga, Ximo – Pina – Rioja, Manu Garcia, Loum, Pellistri – Joselu (4-1-4-1)

Predicted Osasuna Starting Lineup:

Herrera – Sanchez, Aridane, D. Garcia, Vidal – Torro – Torres, Moncayola, Brasanac, R. Garcia – Kike (4-1-4-1)

Alaves vs Osasuna Predictions

Score Prediction: Alaves 0-0 Osasuna

It’s a massive game for Alaves and home advantage ought to give them an edge with bigger crowds possible now in LaLiga than when they played their opening two home fixtures. However they still leave plenty to be desired overall and Osasuna look capable of walking away with a point.
