Inter Milan vs Real Madrid Preview

Real Madrid and Inter Milan will have a real sense of deja-vu as they get ready for their Champions League group stage opener. With Shakhtar Donetsk also in this group, we have three of the four teams who were in what was a very tight group in last season’s competition.
Los Blancos won at the San Siro last November to help get a faltering campaign back on track. A repeat would set them up very nicely to make solid progress from this group and while it’s a different coach this term, Los Blancos will be keen to avoid the drama which saw them only scrape through on the final matchday in 2020/21.
So far, there are reasons for Real Madrid fans to be optimistic this season. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is the form of Vini Junior who is suddenly finishing chances and looks a confident player again. That could make all the difference to Real Madrid’s campaign as they’ve been desperate for a wide player to really show some life and offer some support to Karim Benzema. Vini and Benzema combined well as Los Blancos came from behind to defeat Celta Vigo 5-2 in LaLiga on Sunday night and should offer Real Madrid’s main attacking threat in this match too.
Inter Milan finished bottom in Group B last season, meaning they didn’t even manage to drop into the Europa League. That in the end proved something of a blessing, as Antonio Conte’s side was able to focus on domestic matters as Inter finally ended Juventus’ long dominance of Serie A, winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2009/10.
Conte has since departed, as has star striker Romelu Lukaku, as Inter look to rebuild under the guidance of former Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi. With Achraf Hakimi also leaving for big money, Inter racked up a net transfer profit of around 160 million Euros this summer, great for the bank balance, but not exactly a huge statement of intent as they bid to become a genuine force in European football again.

Head to Head
- Real Madrid won both meetings in the group stage last season.
- Los Blancos won 2-0 at San Siro and 3-2 in Madrid.
- The most recent meetings before that came in the 1998/99 group stage with both sides winning their home fixture.

Stefano Sensi is Inter’s only injury absentee here.
Toni Kroos and Ferland Mendy remain sidelined for the visitors. David Alaba is also a slight doubt but should play.

Inter Milan vs Real Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Inter Milan 1-2 Real Madrid
This Inter side doesn’t on paper carry the same kind of threat as the one Real Madrid faced and twice beat last season. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll repeat the trick here but Los Blancos have made a pretty good start to life under Carlo Ancelotti and they look capable of securing another win in Milan.
