Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo Preview
Sunday’s action in LaLiga concludes at the Santiago Bernabeu with Real Madrid finally returning to their home after 18 months. It won’t be full but it will still be a special occasion for Los Blancos and their followers and they’ll be determined to mark it with a victory.
It has been a reasonably good start for Carlo Ancelotti to life back in the Spanish capital. Real Madrid are one of six teams to have collected 7 points from their opening 3 games. Given all of their matches have been away, that’s a good return and they went into the international break on a positive note with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Real Betis with Dani Carvajal marking his return to the team with the only goal.
Since then we’ve had the Kylian Mbappe saga with the Frenchman ultimately not joining Real Madrid after PSG’s refusal to even entertain the Spanish club’s offer. Los Blancos did though complete the signing Eduardo Camavinga and the young Frenchman is likely to mostly be a back-up this season but is unquestionably a potential star of the future.
Real Madrid’s first test back in their own stadium comes against Celta Vigo. It’s a Celta side that impressed everyone last season but has struggled so far this. They’ve picked up just 1 point from 3 games so far and they were fortunate to get that in a 0-0 draw against Osasuna where they were largely outplayed.
The worry for followers of Celta will be that maybe they have been found out to some extent. They utilise a very distinctive system with Renato Tapia holding in an attacking 4-1-3-2 formation. They’ve made some good summer signings and all the talk was of a potential push for Europe but Chacho Coudet may need to quickly come up with a plan B if the evidence of their early games is anything to go by.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Draws.
- Real Madrid won 3-1 the last time the sides met, in Vigo, in March.
- They’ve won 4 of the last 5 league meetings in Madrid.
- Celta’s last win here was by a 2-1 margin in the Copa del Rey in January.
Ferland Mendy and Toni Kroos remain out for Real Madrid. Luka Modric is also a doubt.
Celta have doubts over some fringe players but should be able to name their strongest XI. The returning Jeison Murillo should start.
Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:
Courtois – Marcelo, Alaba, Militao, Carvajal – Modric, Casemiro, Valverde – Vini, Benzema, Bale (4-3-3)
Predicted Celta Vigo Starting Lineup:

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo Predictions
Score Prediction: Real Madrid 3-1 Celta Vigo
This could be quite an open game. Celta Vigo have plenty of talented players who are capable of producing moments of quality but the buzz of being back at the Bernabeu ought to spur Real Madrid on to an important victory.
