Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Espanyol entertain Atletico Madrid in the opening Sunday game in LaLiga. With some of their rivals not in action this weekend following the late end to the international break, Atletico Madrid have a chance to make themselves the early pace setters but it won’t be easy away to newly promoted Espanyol.
The hosts are widely expected to beat the drop, which is relatively rare in a league where the newly promoted teams are usually amongst the favourites to go straight back down. Espanyol have a lot of players with top flight quality and experience but they haven’t exactly got off to a flying start.
Vicente Moreno’s men are yet to score in three outings although the only goal they have conceded came last time out in defeat against newly promoted Mallorca. They’ve since added Yangel Herrera who looks a really smart signing in midfield while Aleix Vidal and Loren Morón were other late additions. They did also show enough in the 0-0 home draw against Villarreal to suggest they can compete with the defending champions.
Atletico Madrid come into this game having also drawn against Villarreal in their last outing. They were the dominant force in the match but came within seconds of losing it only for a bizarre own goal to grant them a point. Having won their opening two games, 7 points is still a solid return for Atleti so far and they’d be delighted with their start if they can get maximum points here.
We’re now heading into the busy autumn period when Atleti will have to balance Champions League games alongside league matches, while many of their players will be jetting back and forth on international trips. Diego Simeone will have to think long and hard about how to balance his squad but he has plenty of options now, including Antoine Griezmann who made a dramatic late return to the Wanda Metropolitano on deadline day.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Espanyol Wins, 2 Atleti Wins, 1 Draw.
- Espanyol have a good recent record against Diego Simeone’s side having taken 7 points from the last 3 meetings in Barcelona.
- Atleti’s last win here was by a 1-0 margin in 2017.
- One of Simeone’s heaviest ever LaLiga defeats saw Atleti lose 3-0 in this fixture in 2019.
New signing Yangel Herrera is injured while Adrià Pedrosa is a doubt for the home team.
Antoine Griezmann may be on the bench for Atleti. Luis Suarez is a minor doubt following his international involvement.
Predicted Espanyol Starting Lineup:

Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Espanyol 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Espanyol are struggling to create many clear openings and are yet to score, and Atletico Madrid aren’t really the side you want to come up against when that’s the case. It’s likely to be a close game but Atleti have enough quality on the bench to bring players on and potentially nick it in the Second Half.
