Athletic Club vs Mallorca Preview

Athletic Club stadium

Athletic Club entertain Mallorca on Saturday in the late game in LaLiga Santander. The visitors have made a flying start on their return to the top flight but this will be a real test of just how much progress they have made. Victory at San Mames would be a huge statement for the Balearic Islanders but Athletic will be hungry to burst their opponents’ bubble.

Athletic have made a pretty solid start themselves to their first full campaign under Marcelino. Draws against Elche and Barcelona were followed up by an impressive 1-0 win in Vigo last time out. Inaki Williams scored the only goal as the Basque giants claimed three points and while they aren’t a team with enough creative and attacking quality to score hatfuls of goals, Athletic look like they will be a difficult team to play against this term.

Marcelino sides invariably are and he would have benefited from a pre-season to work with his players. A lack of new arrivals again is both a blessing and a curse. While some fresh blood might have helped reinvigorate a team that ended last season on a downer thanks to those two cup Final losses, some of Athletic’s younger players have featured more prominently this term with Oihan Sancet and Unai Vencedor both set to start again here.

As for Mallorca, all the signs are really positive that they may well have enough to beat the drop this season. Few teams had better summer transfer windows than them and they’ve shown long-term planning too with some talented youngsters coming in including Lee Kang-in and Matthew Hoppe late in the window.

On the pitch, results have been good with Mallorca collecting 7 points from their opening 3 games. Having drawn their opening game against Betis, 1-0 wins over Alaves and Espanyol leave them well placed in the very early league table with goals from loan signing Fer Nino and Dani Rodriguez sealing the two victories.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Athletic Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Athletic have won all of their last 5 home games vs Mallorca.
  • The most recent was by a 3-1 margin last year.
  • Mallorca last beat Athletic a decade ago with a 1-0 win in the Balearic Islands.

Team News

Yuri and Peru Nolaskoain remain the only definite absentees for Athletic. Oscar De Marcos is rated doubtful.

Angel Rodriguez is out for Mallorca with Fer Nino set to continue in attack.

Predicted Athletic Starting Lineup:

Simon – Balenciaga, Martinez, Vivian, De Marcos – Muniain, Vencedor, D. Garcia, Berenguer – I. Williams, Sancet (4-4-2)

Predicted Mallorca Starting Lineup:

Reina – Olivan, Raillo, Valjent, Maffeo – Baba, Galarreta – Mboula, Rodriguez, Kubo – Nino (4-2-3-1)

Athletic Club vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Athletic 1-0 Mallorca

All the matches involving these two sides so far this season have been tight, low-scoring affairs and there’s no reason to expect anything different here. Mallorca have made a great start but this is by some distance their toughest fixture to date and Athletic may just have the edge with home advantage.
