Levante vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Levante match action

Levante and Rayo Vallecano clash in the opening game of matchday 4 in LaLiga as the Spanish top flight returns after the international break. The visitors will be raring to go after a convincing win last time out and a high profile signing over the last fortnight with Colombian striker Radamel Falcao making the shock move to Vallecas.

It won’t be easy though against a Levante side that will be hungry for their first win of the campaign. They’ve had some tricky opening fixtures with a thrilling 3-3 home draw against Real Madrid their only outing at the Ciutat de Valencia to date. Paco Lopez will be hoping his side can show more consistency this season and these are exactly the kind of fixtures they need to be regularly winning if they are going to stand a chance of kicking on and perhaps threatening the top half this term.

Levante opted against spending much money in the transfer window and didn’t spend more than a €750k transfer fee on any of their summer arrivals. Shkodran Mustafi and Roberto Soldado bring plenty of experience but their first XI and style of play doesn’t look like it is going to be radically different this year so there should be a great deal of continuity from recent seasons where they have been comfortable in the upper reaches of the bottom half.

As for Rayo Vallecano, things are looking considerably rosier than they were a few weeks ago. Since clinching promotion, they started life back in the top flight with defeats against Sevilla and Real Sociedad before thumping Granada 4-0 in their first home match at the Estadio de Vallecas. It was a really encouraging display from Andoni Iraola’s side and if they can reach those kinds of levels on a consistent basis, they will have a real shot at beating the drop.

There might have been some temptation to stick with the squad they had following that display, but on paper there was still a clear need for fresh recruits and after an underwhelming summer in terms of new arrivals, Rayo finally showed a bit of ambition with some smart signings during the final days and hours of the window. Midfielder Unai López has arrived from Athletic Club and is a strong candidate for a starting role while they addressed their significant need for attacking reinforcements by signing two experienced forwards in the shape of Sergi Guardiola from Real Valladolid and legendary Colombian striker Radamel Falco who largely forged his reputation in the Spanish capital with Atleti.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Levante Wins, 3 Rayo Wins.
  • Both teams have scored in 5 of the last 6 meetings.
  • All of those games were won by the team playing at home.
  • Rayo lost 4-1 on their last visit to Levante in May 2019.

Team News

Aitor Fernandez is available again for Levante but Jorge De Frutos is missing due to injury. Roberto Soldado and Dani Gomez are also doubts.

Rayo Vallecano are expected to have a fully fit squad with some of their new arrivals likely to be on the bench.

Predicted Levante Starting Lineup:

Fernandez – Clerc, Pier, Vezo, Miramon – Bardhi, Radoja, Melero, Campana – Morales, Roger (4-4-2)

Predicted Rayo Starting Lineup:

Dimitrievski – Garcia, Catena, Saveljich, Balliu – Ciss, Comesana – Garcia, Trejo, Merquelanz – Nteka (4-2-3-1)

Levante vs Rayo Vallecano Predictions

Score Prediction: Levante 2-2 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo will be on cloud nine following that big win over Granada and morale in their camp should have been further bolstered by some smart late business. This should be quite an open game between two sides who are likely to adopt a positive approach and we should see a few goals. It certainly looks like a game where both teams will score with the visitors perhaps capable of taking a draw from it.
