Celta Vigo vs Athletic Club Preview
Both Celta Vigo and Athletic Club will go looking for their first win of the 2021/22 season at Balaidos this weekend. The hosts could also do with an improved performance after a slightly disappointing opening to a new campaign that came with much optimism as far as their fans were concerned.
They pushed Atletico Madrid close on MD1, succumbing to Angel Correa’s brace, but Celta certainly had chances to take a point from the game. However they really did put in a disappointing display at Osasuna on Monday night. They barely tested their opponents, registering the lowest xG of any team so far this season in LaLiga.
At the other end, Osasuna had chances to win the game including a penalty and recorded the highest xG of any team on MD2, yet the game would end 0-0 giving Celta their first point of the season. Chacho Coudet would have done plenty of thinking this week as that was close to his strongest XI that started in Pamplona and he’ll be hoping it was just a bad day at the office, although it was worryingly reminiscent of the kind of lackluster displays we became used to from Celta in the two years prior to Coudet’s arrival.
As for Athletic, they come into this game following a strong showing against Barcelona at San Mames last weekend. Marcelino’s side competed well throughout and were on top for much of the game, taking the lead through Inigo Martinez’s header before Memphis Depay equalised late on for the Catalans.
That result made it two draws from two games for Athletic – the first being a goalless affair at Elche on the opening weekend. While there hasn’t been a huge amount to suggest they are suddenly going to become more prolific in front of goal, Inaki Williams’ performance against Barca was an encouraging sign and suggested he is back near his best while brother Nico also featured in that with long-term hopes even higher for the younger of the Wiliams brothers.

Celta Vigo vs Athletic Club Predictions
Score Prediction: Celta 1-1 Athletic
We’ve had draws aplenty in LaLiga so far and it certainly feels as though we may get another one here. Celta on paper are the team that carry much the greater goal threat but they really didn’t play well against Osasuna and Athletic are capable of asking one or two questions on the break. A point apiece may extend the winless starts of both teams past the international break.
Fantasy Football Picks
