Barcelona vs Getafe Preview

Camp Nou

Barcelona are bidding to head into the international break on a positive note when they host Getafe at Camp Nou this weekend. Nothing short of a win will do for Ronald Koeman’s side who dropped points for the first time this season last weekend in Bilbao.

Athletic, and particularly Inaki Williams, caused big problems throughout for new signing Eric Garcia who endured a difficult evening which ultimately resulted in him seeing red in the dying moments. There wasn’t much for Barcelona fans to be encouraged by at the other end with the exception perhaps of Memphis Depay who scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw and already looks right at home in this side.

The confidence bordering on arrogance, that the Dutchman plays with, may be just what Barca need in this transitional period after the departure of Leo Messi. They need players willing to assume responsibility and not afraid to take on the impossible task of filling the great Argentine’s boots in the role of being the attacking linchpin of this side. That won’t faze Depay and he’s likely to be one of the most prominent players in this game too.

In truth, this is a decent fixture for Barcelona to have whilst they are missing some notable defensive players, as Getafe aren’t a team that is carrying much of a goal threat. They’ve started with Sandro Ramirez and Enes Unal in their opening two games in attack but are yet to score this season following 1-0 defeats against both Valencia and Sevilla. New boss Michel may be tempted to make some changes here with Jaime Mata and Mexican youngster José Juan Macías alternative options up top.

There’s a real danger that Michel is going to go into the international break still awaiting his first point in his second spell at the club. Some tough fixtures may largely be the reason for that but Getafe fans will be getting a little tense. Their mood won’t be improved by the expected departure of Marc Cucurella to Brighton for €18 million and these could be some very important days coming up as Getafe presumably look to add a bit more quality to this squad thanks to that cash influx before next week’s transfer deadline.

Team News

Eric Garcia is suspended for the hosts. Gerard Pique and Marc-André ter Stegen are also expected to be absentees.

Marc Cucurella is injured and unlikely to play for the club again with a move to Brighton expected. Vitolo is a doubt.

Predicted Barcelona Starting Lineup:

Neto – Alba, Lenglet, Araujo, Dest – De Jong, Busquets, Sergi Roberto – Memphis, Braithwaite, Griezmann (4-3-3)

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Soria – Olivera, Mitrovic, Djene, Suarez – Vitolo, Maksimovic, Arambarri, Alena – Mata, Unal (4-4-2)

Barcelona vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Getafe

Barcelona ought not to have as much to worry about defensively in this game as in their last two and as such, they ought to record a relatively routine home win. Getafe may not allow Memphis Depay much space to run into but if the visitors do sit deep, Barcelona’s midfielders and more creative players should be able to get into advanced positions and should have enough quality to break their opponents down.
