Mallorca vs Espanyol Preview

Mallorca LaLiga stadium

The first game of matchday 3 in LaLiga 2021/22 sees two newly promoted clubs meet. Espanyol edged Mallorca out by the finest of margins to win the Segunda Division last term and both sides have made solid starts to life back in the big league.

Mallorca recorded their first victory last weekend with new signing Fer Nino making an immediate impact with the goal in the 1-0 win at Alaves. That would have been a huge boost to the confidence levels in the Mallorca camp, particularly given how badly they struggled on their travels during their ultimately unsuccessful 2019/20 top flight campaign. Mallorca lost all of their first seven away fixtures that season and would have to wait until March to record their solitary road victory at Eibar.

The early signs certainly do suggest they will be a much tougher team to play against this season. They look to have done some good business in the loan market once more and coach Luis Garcia will be encouraged by his side’s ability to so far take their strong defensive work from the second tier into the top flight.

Vicente Moreno was of course the coach during Mallorca’s last stint in the Primera, but he’s very much the man in charge of things at Espanyol now and he too will be relatively content with how things have started. Both of Espanyol’s opening fixtures have ended 0-0 but they gave a good account of themselves against a strong Villarreal side last weekend and if they can keep things tight at the back, they should ultimately start winning football matches as there’s certainly top flight quality at the other end of the pitch.

Raul De Tomas will be their biggest goal threat. He partnered Landry Dimata in attack last weekend in what is a relatively settled side from last year. Espanyol have though just added a fresh striker option with Loren Moron joining on loan from Real Betis and you’d imagine he will be pushing hard for a starting role, particularly if Moreno persists with a 4-4-2 system.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Espanyol Wins, 2 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Espanyol won 2-1 here in February in the Segunda Division.
  • They’ve taken 7 points from the last 3 league meetings.
  • Mallorca’s last win over Espanyol was a 2-0 success in the Primera on this ground in 2019.

Team News

Ángel Rodríguez could be out until October for the hosts. Antonio Sánchez also misses this one.

Espanyol have few selection issues but do have a doubt over Adrià Pedrosa.

Predicted Mallorca Starting Lineup:

Reina – Olivan, Valjent, Russo, Maffeo – Ruiz de Galarreta, Baba, Kubo – Rodriguez, Abdon, Mboula (4-3-3)

Predicted Espanyol Starting Lineup:

Lopez – Vila, Cabrera, Gomez, Gil – Puado, Darder, Lopez, Embarba – Wu, R.D.T. (4-4-2)

Mallorca vs Espanyol Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-1 Espanyol

There wasn’t much to choose between these sides last season in the Segunda Division and this promises to be yet another tight game in what has been a league of draws so far. A repeat here would be no surprise but Espanyol fans may finally get a goal to cheer, although it’s unlikely to turn into a high scoring affair.
