Granada vs Valencia Preview

Granada vs Valencia predictions

Valencia were the only side outside of last season’s top four to win on the opening weekend so it was a really good start for Jose Bordalas against his former club. Granada would also have been very happy with the point they claimed at Villarreal so both teams have something to build on heading into this game.

Granada recorded the lowest xG of any team in LaLiga last weekend with not much sign of them scoring but they defended pretty well and ground out a 0-0 draw at the Ceramica. New boss Robert Moreno would have been pleased by their defensive work given the team he inherited did concede the most goals in LaLiga last season.

They actually let in 13 more than Eibar who finished bottom but overall the task awaiting Moreno is still a tough one as he tries to fill the boots of the successful Diego Martinez. One or two players followed their manager out the door but Granada still have a pretty strong spine and enough quality to have a decent season if Moreno can successfully implement his ideas while not undoing what was mostly the good work of his predecessor.

The job awaiting Jose Bordalas is slightly different in that since Marcelino, no coach has really succeeded at Valencia. However the pressure will still be on the former Getafe boss given the size of the club and the hope is that he can make this team more organised and more physical, and potentially kick on to at least challenge for those lesser European places.

In the case of Hugo Guillamón, it seems he took Bordalas’ instructions rather too literally as the 21 year old saw red for a late challenge just 30 seconds into the season opener. Valencia rode their luck at times but somehow still managed to record a 1-0 win in that game thanks to Carlos Soler’s penalty with 20 year old debutant Giorgi Mamardashvili impressing in goal.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Granada Wins, 3 Valencia Wins, 1 Draw.
  • All of the last 4 meetings have seen both teams score.
  • The most recent meeting at Los Carmenes saw 3 red cards in a 2-1 Granada win last December.
  • That was one of just 2 defeats for Valencia in their last 19 matches against this opposition.

Team News

Neyder Lozano is a long-term absentee for Granada with a broken leg. Yan Eteki is also doubtful.

Hugo Guillamón is suspended and likely to be replaced by Uros Racic in what may be the only change from last weekend. Jasper Cillissen is fit again but may have to be content with a place on the bench after Mamardashvili impressed.

Predicted Granada Starting Lineup:

Escandell – Neva, German, Duarte, Foulquier – Milla, Gonalons, Monchu – Machis, Suarez, Puertas (4-3-3)

Predicted Valencia Starting Lineup:

Mamardashvili – Gaya, Alderete, Gabriel, Correia – Cheryshev, Racic, Wass, Jason – Gomez, Guedes (4-4-2)

Granada vs Valencia Predictions

Score Prediction: Granada 1-1 Valencia

The circumstances of Valencia’s opening match where they were playing with 10 men so early and the difficulty of Granada’s opening game, means it’s a bit early to draw any firm conclusions into how these teams may shape up under new management. This game should give us a clearer indication of that but on paper they look pretty evenly matched and a draw might be the most likely outcome.
