Atletico Madrid vs Elche Preview

Atletico Madrid stadium

Atletico Madrid should finally get the chance to get their hands on the LaLiga trophy in front of their own fans on Sunday as the Wanda Metropolitano opens its doors to supporters again. There will no doubt be a terrific reception for the Spanish champions but there is also a match to play with Elche hoping to play the role of party poopers.

Such are the strange times that we have been living through that this will be the first time the likes of Luis Suarez, who dragged Atleti over the line so dramatically at the end of last season, plays in front of his new fans. That’s if he is deemed fit enough to start by Diego Simeone who left a number of key players on the bench last weekend following a busy international summer.

That included big money signing Rodrigo de Paul who featured off the bench in Vigo. The star of the show though was compatriot Angel Correa whose brace ensured it was a winning start for Atleti in a feisty clash at Balaidos. Diego Simeone must decide whether to stick with the players that started that game or bring in a few of the bigger names for this weekend’s match.

As for Elche, they sealed survival on the final day last season and got the new campaign underway with a draw against Athletic Club. It wasn’t a classic by any means but it wasn’t a disastrous result for Fran Escriba as he looks to build a team capable of retaining their top flight status again.

Elche have done some interesting business this summer which might just give them a shot of doing that. Kiko Casilla and Pedro Bigas both made debuts from the start against Athletic and they’ve added forward Darío Benedetto on loan from Marseille this week. That feels like a real coup for Elche and he’s a player who should add some much needed goal threat, although it’s not clear whether he will have any significant involvement in this game.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Atleti Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Atleti have won the last 3 meetings including both games last season.
  • Elche missed a late penalty in a 1-0 defeat against Atleti in May.
  • Atletico Madrid have won all of their last 6 home games against Elche, conceding just once.

Team News

Mario Hermoso is suspended for the hosts. Joao Felix is their only definite injury absentee.

Pablo Piatti is carrying a knock but otherwise Elche should be at full strength here.

Predicted Atletico Madrid Starting Lineup:

Oblak – Felipe, Gimenez, Savic – Saul, De Paul, Koke, Llorente, Trippier – Carrasco, Correa (3-5-2)

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Roco, Bigas, Verdu – Mojica, Marcone, Fidel, Guti, Josan – Boye, Milla (3-5-2)

Atletico Madrid vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Elche

Elche are still adding to their squad and the signs look a bit more encouraging for them than they might have been a few weeks ago. However they are still clearly one of the weakest teams in LaLiga and they will struggle to land any real punches on an Atleti side that ought to win this game, most likely without conceding.
