The Friday night game this week in LaLiga is an Andalusian derby at the Benito Villamarin. Having both drawn their opening fixtures, Real Betis and Cadiz have the opportunity to temporarily go top of the league with victory here and that will add a little bit of incentive to both sides.

Of the two, Real Betis are the more capable of maintaining a challenge in the top half of this division but there is still the overriding sense that their 6th place finish last year was something of an overachievement. They weren’t massively convincing on the opening weekend, failing to record a single shot on target against newly promoted Mallorca but they still came away with a 1-1 draw thanks to an own goal from the home team’s keeper Manolo Reina.

Manuel Pellegrini will at least take some comfort from a relatively assured defensive display given that area of the team was a significant concern heading into the new season after some notable departures. With limited funds to strengthen, Betis look like they are going to give some of their young players a chance this season with European football also to factor in. They handed a start to 21 year old attacking midfielder Rodri at Mallorca and it looks like he may have a bigger role to play this term along with some other academy graduates.

As for Cadiz, they’ll be hoping they can hit the road running on the road in the same manner as last season. They actually won their opening four away games in the 2020/21 campaign immediately following promotion, taking a number of sides by surprise. The secret is out to some extent now but Alvaro Cervera will be hoping he still has a few jokers up his sleeve as he looks to cause more trouble on the road for some of LaLiga’s big boys.

Cadiz also came from behind to seal a 1-1 draw in their opening match. Trailing at home to Levante heading into Stoppage Time, they somehow salvaged a point through Alfonso Espino’s 97th minute leveller. That was Cadiz’s latest ever LaLiga goal and while not the ideal way to start the season, they would have left the pitch in good spirits and Cadiz will be hungry to spring a surprise in this derby clash.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Betis Wins, 1 Cadiz Win, 1 Draw.
  • Real Betis won both meetings 1-0 last season.
  • Their only recent loss against Cadiz was a 5-3 defeat on this ground in the Copa del Rey in 2017.
  • That’s Cadiz’s only win in 9 competitive meetings this century.

Team News

New signing Youssouf Sabaly is Betis’ most significant absentee. Alex Moreno is also an injury doubt.

Jon Ander Garrido and Jose Mari are missing for the visitors. Juan Cala is training again but may not start.

Predicted Real Betis Starting Lineup:

Silva – Miranda, Bartra, Ruiz, Montoya – Canales, Rodriguez – Fekir, Rodri, Ruibal – Iglesias (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Espino, Haroyan, Fali, Akapo – Alex Fernandez, Alarcon, Jonsson, Salvi – Negredo, Lozano (4-4-2)

Real Betis vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Betis 1-0 Cadiz

Betis had the edge on Cadiz last season and they ought to be pretty dominant in terms of possession here. Cadiz will try to cause trouble on the break but it’s hard to look past the hosts. Betis have only lost once at the Benito Villamarin in LaLiga since last November and they ought to have enough quality in attacking areas to find a breakthrough at some point in this game.
