Chelsea vs Villarreal Preview
The 2021/22 football season at the elite level truly kicks off on Wednesday with the UEFA Super Cup and it sees Champions League winners Chelsea meet Europa League winners Villarreal in Belfast. For the Spanish side, it’s an immediate chance to add fresh silverware to a trophy cabinet that was bare prior to a glorious night in Gdansk back in May.
While this isn’t always high on the list of priorities for the European giants, this is a really big game for Villarreal and they’ll be hungry to try and cause another upset in a European Final against Premier League opposition. Unai Emery’s side won an epic penalty shootout against Manchester United to clinch their first major trophy after a disciplined display saw them frustrate the English club. That came at the end of a really strong Europa League run with Villarreal avoiding defeat throughout the entire 2020/21 season in that competition.
With Champions League football on the horizon, Villarreal have strengthened over the summer, bringing in Juan Foyth on a permanent deal while forward Boulaye Dia and defender Aïssa Mandi have also joined. Carlos Bacca, who started the Europa League Final, has left the club however along with Ramiro Funes Mori and Jaume Costa.
Villarreal have been gearing up for this game by facing Premier League opposition in friendly matches in the UK. They were beaten 3-2 by Leicester before a 2-2 draw with Leeds at the weekend in their final outing before this match.
Chelsea meanwhile also caused an upset in the Champions League Final, beating favourites Manchester City to lift the trophy for the second time. They enjoyed a really strong second half of the season under Thomas Tuchel and expectation levels are pretty high for what they can achieve as the German gears up for his first full season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
So far there have been lots of outgoings in West London with fringe players and young players leaving but no major arrivals this summer. That may soon change with Romelu Lukaku set to return to the club for just shy of £100m. The deal for the Belgian is unlikely to be complete in time for him to feature in this game though, meaning Timo Werner is likely to get a start up front and he will certainly be keen to make a positive impression given the imminent arrival of Lukaku.
Head to Head
- This will be the first ever competitive meeting between the clubs.
- Villarreal beat English sides Arsenal and Manchester United on their way to winning the Europa League last term.
- Chelsea beat Spanish sides Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid on their way to winning the Champions League.
Chelsea are on the brink of signing Romelu Lukaku but this game may come too soon. Jorginho, Cesar Azpilicueta, Mason Mount and Thiago Silva are among the Chelsea players to have been involved in international tournaments deep into July and may only feature off the bench, if at all here.
Villarreal are missing Pau Torres who was involved in both Euro 2020 and the Olympics. Key man Dani Parejo is an injury doubt, as is Samu Chukwueze. Francis Coquelin, Geronimo Rulli, Etienne Capoue and Vicente Iborra are also doubts after a COVID-19 scare in the Villarreal camp.
Predicted Chelsea Starting Lineup:
Mendy – Rudiger, Zouma, Azpilicueta – Alonso, Kante, Kovacic, Hudson-Odoi – Havertz, Ziyech – Werner (3-4-2-1)
Predicted Villarreal Starting Lineup:
Asenjo – Pedraza, Albiol, Mandi, Pena – Moreno, Trigueros, Foyth, Pino – Nino, G. Moreno (4-4-2)
Chelsea vs Villarreal Prediction: Chelsea to Win 3-1
Villarreal have been leaking goals in pre-season and they will be without some key players here which makes it hard to see them producing a performance on the level we saw in the latter stages of last season’s Europa League. Chelsea might not be up to full fitness yet but even without any major arrivals, they still have real depth to their squad and it feels as though they may be too strong for a weakened Villarreal.
