This Sunday we are in Catalonia for the second leg of the La Liga SmartBank play off final. Everything is still to play for as Girona host Rayo Vallecano in the Estadi Montilivi. Anything could happen in this game and that is what makes it more fascinating. This should be a great game and could provide us with a thrilling ending to a great season.
Girona are coming into this with a 2-1 lead from what was a fantastic first leg which was end to end. Head Coach Francisco will know that on another day Rayo could have picked up the win and that is something he will be reminding his players that the job is no way complete.
He will want his side to control the game more and also be tighter at the back like in recent weeks. The Blanquivermells did take their chances in the first leg and that is why they do lead with striker Mamadou Sylla back on the scoresheet again. He is proving to be a real handful for any defence he comes up against. The Catalans need to put on another great performance and can’t really afford to concede early like in their last match. The players will be nervous but will know a win here and they are back in the big time.
Rayo will feel a little hurt especially with the disallowed goal late on which would have seen them draw the game. Los Franjirrojos dominated the ball in the first leg and will want to do the same here. The big one for Andoni Iraola’s side is putting chances away.
If they can get off to a fast start like at the Vallecas then they could really hurt Girona and pile on the pressure. Just like most of the season it all depends on which Rayo turns up. If the Rayo we know turns up and throws caution to the wind, this could be a high scoring match which will come down to who is the most clinical and who wants it the most.

This match could really be decided by who scores first. Rayo need to go for it which could leave them more open but if they score they know they will have hurt Girona and have them on the ropes. Girona on the other hand could sit a little deeper and hit them on the counter and then would have a significant lead. It is hard to look past the latter. Girona do not concede many goals at home and should have enough quality to do it.
