Rayo Vallecano vs Girona Preview
On Sunday we have the first leg of the Segunda play off final. It all begins at the Estadio Vallecas as Rayo Vallecano host Girona. Both teams are looking in great shape and both teams will be aiming to get one foot in the Primera.
Rayo are one of the best teams in this division when they are on form. The problem for Andoni Iraola’s side is that they have been very inconsistent and that nearly led to them not making the play offs but here they are in the final. There was no inconsistency in their last two outings and it looks like they have really raised the bar.
Los Franjirrojos hammered Leganés in the first leg of the semi-final and after a shaky start to the second leg they came out on top winning 2-1 with an overall aggregate lead of 5-1. This performance will inject huge confidence going into this game. Rayo will want a fast start and even if they concede, they are a side who will go again with their “we will outscore you” mentality.
Girona are coming into this game without a loss in ten games and confidence is very high. They are scoring goals but the big thing is that they are not conceding. In their last two outings, Los Blanquivermells comfortably beat Almería 3-0 before drawing 0-0 in the second leg. Head Coach Francisco will be very happy with his side and that they stopped Almería scoring in two games is a massive feat considering the Andalusians scored 61 goals this season, with only champions Espanyol scoring more.
Girona will also be looking for a fast start and they will be wanting something to take back to the Montilivi. Striker Cristhian Stuani is being monitored as he is trying to overcome his hamstring problem but is now expected to feature. Édgar Bárcenas is absent though as he is away on international duty with Panama and will be missed.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Girona Wins, 2 Rayo Wins, 1 Draw.
- Rayo have won 4 of the last 5 meetings in Vallecas.
- They won 2-1 when the sides met here in April.
- The Madrid club have taken 7 points from the last 3 league meetings having lost 3 on the bounce against Girona prior to that.
Rayo Vallecano vs Girona Predictions
Score Prediction: Rayo 1-1 Girona
This game could go anywhere. It all depends who scores first and who takes their chances. Both teams are coming into this with huge belief and confidence but luck could also play its part. Nerves could also lead to a mistake in such an important game. In what could be an end to end match, a 1st Leg draw looks likely.
