Girona vs Almeria Preview
The play-offs in LaLiga SmartBank kick off this Wednesday with a meeting between two sides who suffered heartbreak at this stage in the season last term and actually met each other at this stage. Girona and Almeria are both bidding to make amends but only one of them can progress into the Final from what is expected to be a competitive tie.
Girona progressed from their Semi-Final against Almeria ten months ago. As is the case here, they were at home first, winning 1-0 at Montilivi before a 2-1 win in Andalusia completed the job. Talisman Cristhian Stuani scored in both ties and while Girona have been less dependent on him this season, the Uruguayan is still a key man and the Catalans are hoping he is passed fit to start here.
Heading into these play-offs, Girona are certainly the form team. They won 7 games on the spin to clinch a play-off place before drawing what was essentially a meaningless final game against Cartagena. They’ve only lost once since losing at home to Almeria in early March and Francisco’s men will take confidence from that, as well as their victory over this opposition at this very stage last season.
Almeria will carry a few demons from that but they’ve a different coach at the helm now with Rubi overseeing the conclusion to their season while some players have also come and gone. In theory, they are the best equipped of the four teams to compete in the top flight with deeper pockets than the others but as their wealthy owner has quickly discovered, getting out of this league is no easy task.
You sense they’d have rather avoided Girona at this stage, and they’d clearly rather have avoided the play-offs altogether but a late season slump saw them fall well short of automatic promotion in the end. Perhaps significantly, they did at least end the campaign with back-to-back wins and saw off Sporting Gijon 2-0 on the final matchday despite resting virtually their entire first XI. Little that has happened before matters now though, and it’s all about delivering in a high pressure play-off situation.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Girona Wins, 2 Almeria Wins, 1 Draw.
- There was only 1 goal in the 2 meetings this season, scored by Almeria at Montilivi.
- The two clashes produced a total of four red cards – all of which were for Girona players.
- Girona beat Almeria at this stage last season, winning 1-0 at home and 2-1 away in the Play-Off Semi.
Girona vs Almeria Predictions
Score Prediction: Girona 2-1 Almeria
Girona ended the season so well and it is they who take the greater momentum into this game and in the 1st Leg they may just have the edge. While no side won more away games than Almeria during the regular season, they did lose 8 times on their travels and there is still a fragility there at times and Girona’s experience could be telling in this tie.
