Sporting Gijon vs Almeria Preview
Sporting Gijon face a crucial final day game on Sunday as they bid to pip Rayo Vallecano to the final play-off place. They must beat Almeria, who have already secured a play-off place, to stand a chance. If they do that, Sporting will be in the play-offs if Rayo fail to win their match at home to Lugo.
The ball is certainly in the Madrid club’s court and it has the potential to be a bitterly disappointing climax to the season for Sporting, even if they win this. The Asturians got off to a flying start, winning their first four matches and have spent virtually the entire season in the top six. However they’ve won just two of their last nine to slide down to 7th place and put themselves in a position where they need a big favour elsewhere on the final day.
The way they’ve been playing, there’s no guarantee they will take care of their own business. They average just 0.9 goals per game in LaLiga SmartBank and only six teams in the entire division have inferior records. They couldn’t find that much needed breakthrough in a 0-0 draw against Fuenlabrada earlier in the week and that really has often been the story of the season for David Gallego’s side.
The good news for Sporting is that Almeria have sealed their place in the play-offs which start just three days after this match. With very little separating the teams between 3rd and 6th, there doesn’t appear to be any huge advantage in trying hard to finish higher up and Almeria’s recently appointed boss Rubi may opt to rest players here to ensure they are fresh for the Semi-Final.
Almeria ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Espanyol and Mallorca in the race for automatic promotion slots. There’s no great shame in that but the Almeria president clearly didn’t think so, making yet another coaching change in late April as Jose Gomes departed. There have been tentative signs that their form has turned a corner with just one defeat in their last seven and they booked their play-off slot by beating UD Logrones 2-1 on Monday night.

Sporting Gijon vs Almeria Predictions
Score Prediction: Sporting Gijon 1-0 Almeria
Almeria won’t be in any mood to use any unnecessary energy up and are likely to make changes here. Sporting have been strong at home all season and you’d fancy them to take care of business in this kind of game and they’ll just have to keep everything crossed in the hope that Rayo slip up in Madrid.
