Castellon vs Rayo Vallecano Preview
There will be real tension at the Nou Estadi Castàlia on Monday evening with the stakes high for both Castellon and Rayo Vallecano ahead of their Segunda Division clash. Anything less than a win would leave the home team in danger of suffering relegation on the night, while Rayo desperately need all the points as they target a play-off place.
Castellon have competed pretty well on their return to this level but they really have hit a bad run of form at just the wrong time. Three straight defeats against Cartagena, Ponferradina and Real Zaragoza leave them in the drop-zone with just two games to play. A return of 0 goals scored and 6 conceded during that period contributed to the sacking of Juan Carlos Garrido on Friday after just five months in charge.
They’ve opted to go to a former coach to guide them through these key final two games and into next season too, whichever division they find themselves in. Sergio Escobar was in charge of Castellon between 2017 and 2018 and guided them to promotion from the Tercera to the Segunda B. He’s had spells in Colombia and Croatia since but returns to his native Valencian Community for another crack at the Castellon job.
As for Rayo Vallecano, they are in danger of missing out on the play-offs despite having spent almost the whole season in the top six. They are 7th heading into this one, level on points with Sporting in 6th but with an inferior H2H record. They host struggling Lugo on the final day and may end up needing to win both games to make it.
The good news for Rayo fans is they do seem to have found a bit of form again. Back-to-back wins over Fuenlabrada and Real Oviedo have boosted their chances. They hammered the latter 4-1 in Vallecas last time out and that would have restored some confidence. Their strong record against the top sides and unpredictable nature means they could be a real handful in the play-offs but they have plenty of work to do just to get there.
Head to Head
- Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 4 Rayo Wins, 1 Draw.
- Rayo won 2-1 when the sides met in Vallecas earlier this term.
- They’ve not visited Castellon since a 3-1 Segunda win in 2009.
Castellon vs Rayo Vallecano Predictions
Score Prediction: Castellon 1-2 Rayo Vallecano
It’s a big ask for Sergio Escobar to come in as a new coach and turn things around for Castellon in the final two games of the season at such short notice. Castellon haven’t offered very much in recent weeks and with Rayo hitting a bit of form, the visitors look the team more likely to get the win they badly need.
