Sevilla vs Alaves Preview

Sevilla stadium

After 379 matches, LaLiga 2020/21 ends at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday evening with the final act of the Spanish top flight season. In truth, this will be something of an anti-climatic ending with all of the meaningful action on the final weekend taking place on Saturday.

Only if Barcelona lose at Eibar will there be anything riding on this in terms of position for Sevilla. Otherwise they will be set for a 4th place finish which would represent another very solid campaign for Julen Lopetegui’s side. They even briefly threatened to challenge for the title but that was always most likely going to be a bridge too far.

They should find some motivation here in the knowledge that a win would see them set a club record points tally for a top flight season. Sevilla could have reached that milestone last weekend but had a rare off day with Diego Carlos seeing red in a 4-0 defeat at Villarreal with the home team inspired by former Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca. Attention will already be turning to the summer break and you can always rely on Sevilla sporting director Monchi to do good business which suggests they will be in a strong position to compete again next term.

Alaves meanwhile approach this game with their top flight status guaranteed, something that was very much in doubt only a few weeks back. Prior to Javi Calleja’s arrival it looked not only possible, but probable that they may end up dropping down to the Segunda Division, but the former Villarreal boss has done a fine job in Vitoria.

Their last 8 games have yielded 4 wins and only 1 defeat with Alaves 5th in the form table over that period heading into the final weekend. A comprehensive 4-2 win over Granada last weekend sealed the deal but attention will quickly turn to the transfer market. With Espanyol and Mallorca expected to be pretty strong on their returns to the top flight, the likes of Alaves may have a harder time beating the drop next time around unless they can find some gems in the market.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Sevilla Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Sevilla won 2-1 when the sides met earlier in the season in Vitoria.
  • Alaves picked up a point on their last visit to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
  • However they’d lost on their previous 5 trips to Sevilla.

Team News

Marcos Acuna and Diego Carlos serve bans for Sevilla. They have no injury concerns.

Rodrigo Ely, Inigo Cordoba and Javier Lopez are missing through injury for the visitors.

Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:

Bono – Escudero, Gomez, Kounde, Navas – Jordan, Fernando – Ocampos, Gomez, Suso – En-Nesyri (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Duarte, Lejeune, Laguardia, Martin – Pons, Battaglia, Pina, Rioja – Perez, Joselu (4-4-2)

Sevilla vs Alaves Prediction: Sevilla to Win 2-1

That opportunity to reach a record points tally should fire up these Sevilla players to make a bit of club history. They’ve been very strong at home all season even without their usual passionate backing and they should be able to see off an Alaves side that may just struggle to reach the high standards they’ve set in recent weeks now that safety has been secured.
