Two of the most improved teams in LaLiga 2020/21 clash on the final weekend as Celta Vigo play host to Real Betis. Both coaches will be able to reflect on jobs well done regardless of the result here but it’s a big game for Real Betis who are aiming to clinch Europa League qualification.

Celta Vigo have defied the theory that mid-table teams tend to be a soft touch at the end of the season. They are finishing the campaign with a real flourish and have reeled off 5 straight wins heading into this one. That sequence culminated with an excellent 2-1 win at Camp Nou last time out with Santi Mina’s brace settling the game in favour of the Galician side.

Mina has been a good example of how Chacho Coudet has managed to get more out of some of Celta’s other attacking players. Prior to his appointment, they were always so dependent on Iago Aspas for inspiration and while he does remain key to the whole operation, increasingly goals are coming from other areas with the likes of Nolito and Brais Mendez also chipping in.

This could have been a straight shootout for a place in Europe but Real Betis’ 1-0 win over Huesca last time out means Celta can no longer qualify. Betis will be back in continental action in 2021/22 but we don’t know which competition yet. Victory here would secure Europa League qualification but anything less would give Villarreal the chance to pip them, although that’d be dependent on the Yellow Submarine getting a result away to title-chasing Real Madrid.

Betis have been much improved this term under Manuel Pellegrini who has really overseen a transformation into them becoming a much more confident team and one that is much harder to beat. They’ve gone 10 without defeat heading into this match, and while there have been plenty of draws, it has been enough to keep them ticking along towards European qualification.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Betis Wins, 1 Celta Win, 2 Draws.
  • Betis have won 3 of the last 4 clashes.
  • That includes a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture earlier this term in Seville.
  • They’ve only lost on 1 of their last 5 trips to Balaidos.

Team News

Renato Tapia, Hugo Mallo and Joseph Aidoo are doubts for the hosts. Jeison Murillo misses out again.

Aissa Mandi is fit again for Betis who have a doubt over Paul Akouokou.

Predicted Celta Vigo Starting Lineup:

Villar – Marin, Araujo, Dominguez, Vazquez – Beltran – Nolito, Suarez, Mendez – Aspas, Mina (4-1-3-2)

Predicted Betis Starting Lineup:

Bravo – Miranda, Ruiz, Bartra, Emerson – Rodri, Guardado – Canales, Fekir, Joaquin – Iglesias (4-2-3-1)

Celta Vigo vs Real Betis Prediction: 1-1 Draw

We’ve seen Betis go away to the likes of Real Madrid in recent weeks and get results and there is a toughness to them now that was for so long lacking under previous coaches. They’ve a decent record on this ground and look capable of getting a result – one that should be enough to seal Europa League football next season.
